Subject: Tex mapping-false preview, "blind" renders

I started learning bitmap tex last night. No word in the official man. A problem: I created a simple checkerboard bitmap and loaded it [F6, Image texture, Load image, etc.]. I experimented with mapping but I get different result in the preview window and in the renderer. Internal sees only the upper surface and the rest is black irrespective of the position of light [as shown; actually the light can be even below the cube and the side walls are still black] while YafRay generates a white cube [with the same light as shown]. Any ideas?
