Just curious as to what everyone thought was a good and easy way to get started selling from your own site.

Do you mean create a showcase for your products on your site and link back to the Renderosity store or sell from a store on your site?

Tammy posted Mon, 05 February 2001 at 7:11 PM

I mean just sell outright from my own site Im just not sure where to begin, I need something thats not too difficult or expensive to set up.

JeffH posted Mon, 05 February 2001 at 7:16 PM

I'd say that would be a very expensive thing to try if you want to retain the abiltiy to accept credit card orders. Some people use www.paypal.com though.

Thanks Jeff for your help I will check it out.

You do need to take real care though if you handle ANY info that can be stolen, i.e. credit card numbers as the vendor is now responsible for losses if a card number gets stolen from the vendor site. Be aware of ALL the laws before you take it on. I looked into it and I was not prepared for the liability. Now paypal is probably not a bad idea for you. Marque

I have used paypal for gosh, about 8 months and have not had any trouble. Good luck with your new business.

Forgot to mention the whole set up is customisable. You don't have to have the shopping cart if you don't want, but if you do you'll need do the code yourself. My whole site is hand coded, mostly from habit (I do this for a living) but partly to make use of the shopping cart. It also gave me the opportunity to implement a search engine (if somewhat crude and dirty). They also do an affiliate program whereby you pay people a small percetage of the sale price (you say how much), for plugging and advertising, linking etc. I don't personally use this though.

heyas; i use kagi. they dont have a shopping cart, just a sorta simple order form page. however, they not only take credit cards, they also take money orders and checks. they also accept payment worldwide. kagi takes a small percentage of each sale. there are no fees to setup or maintain your account.

Bloodsong, How do you deliver your product? Email or provide a download page? Tammy, Yahoo has a good click n build system, but it is $100 a month. smerc

heyas; currently, i ship cds. i would like to ship non-media models to email addresses... but i understand that downloading is the preferred method. why?

Tammy posted Tue, 06 February 2001 at 10:54 PM

Thanks for the help everyone I need someone that does the downloads I cant afford a huge setup fee or monthly fee Im checking through all the links thanks for your help on this.

pdblake posted Wed, 07 February 2001 at 2:36 AM

Regnow does downloads, there is no set up fee, they just take a percentage (about 21%) for the credit card stuff.

smerc posted Wed, 07 February 2001 at 6:02 AM

pdblake, The shopping cart on your site, Is that included with a Regnow.com account? Would they sell anything found in the Renderosity store or would they balk at some of the more adult stuff, like textures or sexy poses? Bloodsong, I've just been looking for a click and build system that processes credit cards and delivers the package for a resonable price. smerc

bloodsong posted Wed, 07 February 2001 at 10:55 AM

21%???? um, kagi's is rather lower than that. ;) smerc, kagi does not do delivery. (i guess thats why regnow's higher :) ) you'd have to handle that end.

pdblake posted Wed, 07 February 2001 at 12:31 PM

Bloodsong: Regnow handles all kinds of delivery including downloading and reg keys for software. Smerc: The cart is included with the account but you have to implement it yourself. Take a look at the code on my site for some idea of how it works. I don't think they mind what you sell as long as it's legal, you might have to mail them and ask.

heyas; sounds good. but do they take checks? :)

pdblake posted Thu, 08 February 2001 at 12:40 PM

Just checked for you (no pun intended), yes they do.
