...just out of curiosity -- has there ever been a photo gallery page without a flower photo on it?

cynlee posted Sat, 21 May 2005 at 11:15 PM

yes... in the dead of winter :]

unstrung65 posted Sat, 21 May 2005 at 11:21 PM

....nope - Cyn - if it's winter here in this hemisphere - it's summer in the other - nice try though! xo

cynlee posted Sat, 21 May 2005 at 11:25 PM

go back in the archives... i'd give you the link but the gallery won't hold still :D

...I like flowers...and pets even...honest!..( had a dog once... one day I came home and he was gone ! ...."Scotty" was his name...my dad gave him to the dog pound ) .... but good gracious there are other things in the universe to photograph.....( braces for onslaught ) --ah -well - just trying to cause trouble ......it's in my nature.

DeviousMoose posted Sat, 21 May 2005 at 11:44 PM

LOL... I agree with you unstrung. Something I have felt about this gallery for a loooonnnnng time. But there is something worse than a flower or a pet photo. It's a flower or a pet photo with tons of viewings, an EXCELLENT rating, and many "votes." (setting up the wall for the tsunami from those who disagree) It seems this gallery is becoming more about "cute" than creative.

unstrung65 posted Sat, 21 May 2005 at 11:50 PM

.....thanks Mr Devious --- now we're cooking ! -- prepare for a donnybrook - the flower defenders are coming! ( batton down the hatches - hide your pets! )

( * salute * ) ----- surely there must be some 'blue meanies' out there to come to our aid ??????

I think it is because flowers are so easy to take, and if there is nothing to do or if you cannot go out somewhere...the garden is the choice to practice the shutter.

unstrung65 posted Sun, 22 May 2005 at 2:09 AM

...yes -- but you must resist the temptation --venture beyond your gates into the world beyond -- resist their natural beauty & scent -- be strong -- and if you fall under their spell and trip the shutter - then resist posting it -- give us a flower free gallery page!!! ---is that too much to ask ??..... join the movement..of...well --- two at the moment - and I don't know where this Moose character has gone -- probably to bed.....which is where I am going --- I'll take up the battle tomorrow.....

Onslow posted Sun, 22 May 2005 at 5:42 AM

I don't think flower photographs are easy at all. I only dabble because I do not have the time, or more relevant the resources to do the subject justice. There is the problem of finding the good specimens to photograph to start with - expensive if you use a florist and you will have to build a good relationship up so they save you the best ones without flaws, or you could grow your own, very time consuming and expensive with the care they will need. You need to show photographic skills in: lighting, exposure and good composition to get a decent picture out of it when you have your specimen. No excuses either because in most part you are in total control of everything, even the movement of the flower with the light while you set up, unlike some other genres of photography. If you do all this choosing backgrounds, lighting, getting the exposure and dof right the subject shows up every flaw your camera has which in some genres it is easier to get away with. I would love to have a good quality medium format camera to do the job properly, but most of us have to manage. Compact cameras and most dslr's are not really up to the task, but this is a hobby and it still fun trying and getting the best results you can with the equipment you have. Maybe one day when I am able to afford to have better equipment, then I am sure what I have learnt now will come in handy. None of the genres of photography are any easier than any others, they all require skill and learning to achieve the best results.

Nicola...I don't think ANYONES images should be ridiculed! Everyone takes photos for different reasons, of stuff that catches their EYE, whatever that may be. The galleries are there for sharing these images, no matter WHAT your level is (Beginner to advanced) Noone should hesitate to post or ask for feedback/help in general here. We can all learn from each others images, Points of view and perspectives.

That's what it's all about in my book!

A woman whose work I greatly admire.... and one whom I consider to be the consumate photographic artist. Author of many photo books...... some of them about flowers.

Hey I like flowers, and still photograph them once in a while... even though I've moved beyond "pretty" in my "serious" artwork.... flowers are a gift, and their beauty is fleeting.

Ok in defense of unstrung, I can see the humor in it.... in fact I laughed when I read it.... it's true! Pets and flowers..... but that's ok! I skip over most of them too, but you will see some absolutely gorgeous floral work in there as well. You have to dig for the diamonds..... they are there.

And hey I look at it this way if you took away all the images of flowers and kitties, what would be left?

Hmmmm........ lots and lots of bad snapshots of the various naked female, some of them butt ugly. Usually taken in cheap skuzzy motel rooms or dirty bedroom with bad lighting and bad pose.... Absolutely nothing artisitic in them, yet even those images still manage to gather the usual suspects for commenting. Soooooooo, That's my pet peeve.....

I'll take the flowers and the pets thank you very much.....

Hey I'll vote for a page without a nudie shot.... how's that?
Hey Did I just rant?!

....OK --- I just woke up -- ( late ! ) --- hell it's Sunday....now ---lets see --- a few flower photos have sprung up here & there - and - well - dearest Nikki - NO ONE ever said taking flower photos was easy! --( I didn't ) --- hell - I've only taken one myself that amounted to anything - ( and that was dedicated to Cyn - who has wisely ducked out of this - er - discussion... gotta love her! )----- now Nikki -- hmmmm - you know I love your photography , including flowers ...... and as a good will gesture to the 'flower people' - I'm willing to make peace - I will give up my 'dream' of a flower free page and promise to take up gardening some day ( when I get older ) -- and I must tell you - one of my favorite photos of all time on this site was Gerhard's 'Tulip In Sepia ------ so I officially end my flower rant ---- ( for now ) --- where the hell did that Devious guy go !!!!

unstrung65 posted Sun, 22 May 2005 at 10:29 AM

....@ Michele -- I like your take on things! ----we would just have a tiny wee little gallery without flowers & pets --- just maybe a few poorly photographed & naked ladies......and not enough to fill up the page ......( -oh - by the way - Georgia O'Keefe is one of my favorite artists -and she does flowers REAL BIG ! -- but ,then - it could be that 'erotic' element that's subconciously drawing me in...never mind ) -------- anyway this was a fun discussion (??? ) ....especially liked Tedz artistic contribuition - ( how does he come up with an image like that so fast?? ) .......have a nice day everyone ( except for deviousmoose )

Onslow posted Sun, 22 May 2005 at 10:44 AM

Unstrung - yeah I fully appreciated the fun element of the topic and was laughing all the way - but I do think it needed pointing out that flower photography is not to be dismissed as being easy (not that was by you).

DeviousMoose posted Sun, 22 May 2005 at 11:35 AM

geeeeeeez...... I go to bed one night & wake up the next morning & look what happens......... (running for my reinforcements....) OKAY flower photography may not be easy in all cases..... but in some cases..... same with the pets. BUT read the comments on the image & see if more than 15% of the comments are about the image. It's the good photo that has taken some imagination, creativity, & techinal expertise that get the comments like "what a cute shade of pink," or "pretty flower," or (my favorite) "what a pretty cat." (go back to comment #18 by L8RDAZE- if the comments are about the photo & helpful)To sum it up- theres a difference between a PHOTO & a SNAPSHOT. Looking at the images submitted to this thread- at least these had something other than just hitting the shutter release. There was something that actually went into the photo to make it a work of art. And isnt that what Renderosity is about?? The ART? Maybe it would just be easy if RR would add a new category- "Scrapbooking."

unstrung65 posted Sun, 22 May 2005 at 11:53 AM

....so there you are ! mr. DM---- well - I must say -- the photo gallery is not really about making art -- just a place to post and share your photos -- make some new friends - encourage one another -- but those without a good eye will always flock to one another and fawn over each others work - what's the harm in that ??? -- "oh! - what a pretty flower!"......so what ? ---- it's not a place for high 'art' --- though there is some truly excellent work here too ! --- soooo - it is what it is - and rides along at a certain 'set-point' that it will not rise above or sink below --- all attempts to elevate it from what it is - will fail -- just accept it - go with the flow & be happy ---resistance is futile.......jeeze - I'm grumpy --- must get a cheeseburger...........cheers!

Tedz... that would have been more appropro if it were a flower coming out from the valley.
Ahhhh also unstrung.... I shall explain my absence- my eldest spawn headed out today for an internship at DisneyWorld ("the happiest place on the planet"- Rosity is second) so this moose was hibernating early dreaming of pets running thru flowers early and then had to take her to the airport where we were almost late cause one of my cats was sitting by a flowerpot & I just had to.....

DJB posted Sun, 22 May 2005 at 12:47 PM

No flowers are not easy. They do stay still for you on the most part. You can get the opportunity to take many shots to be able to choose from. Not like a bird that will fly away or moving things that one will bever get that shot again. Maybe that's why I like landscapes and flower shots. Anyway this thread I believe was intended for humour. Right? Michelle's rant was good. cynlee....I laughed good reading her (insert.... Can always count on Tedz for the chucklles too.

jimry posted Sun, 22 May 2005 at 1:32 PM

yes Doug...with flowers etc, you can rehearse the shot as it were, but with wild life, only one chance...any shot of a flower, bud, macro of a flower takes time and skill and doesnt come easy...guess depends on what shot yer want to begin with...diff between a snapshot and a photograph of a flower...as in any genre:)

I can certainly understand why some people may get a little tired of seeing flowers on every page of the RO gallery, but hey, I think if you can show a flower in a new and unusual way, or just capture the perfection of nature in your own style, then it is worth looking at no matter the subject matter.
