Poser Python Scripting F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Sep 18 2:50 am)

We now have a ProPack Section in the Poser FreeStuff.
Check out the new Poser Python Wish List thread. If you have an idea for a script, jot it down and maybe someone can write it. If you're looking to write a script, check out this thread for useful suggestions.

Also, check out the official Python site for interpreters, sample code, applications, cool links and debuggers. This is THE central site for Python.

You can now attach text files to your posts to pass around scripts. Just attach the script as a txt file like you would a jpg or gif. Since the forum will use a random name for the file in the link, you should give instructions on what the file name should be and where to install it. Its a good idea to usually put that info right in the script file as well.

Subject: Even more SnakeHead Power - Wave file capability in Python

FYI to everyone, there's a module in the Python installation called wave. Lets you read, write and do some manipulation with uncompressed *.wav files. Might be useful to those laying down sound with their animations. The Numpy install includes routines for FFT if you want to get into any signal processing, filtering, etc. Also think we should form up the Fraternal Order of Poser Snakeheads (FOPS) :-))

We have to have a funky snake handshake :)

How about a logo with dice in a "snake-eyes" position? Actually I am not Anti-Python. I will just be happier when there is some type of group or entity that can offer TESTED Python scripts. I am much too cautious to download any Py-Script no matter what someone tells me, unless I really trust them. I feel really sorry for those in the future who don't take such precautions... And so, there is a great opportunity for someone to supply Trusted and Tested Py-Scripts. How about MOM's APPLE PY - "Py Just Like Mother Used To Make"...

I would suggest that we follow up on Fox-Mulder's last thought. Possibly with the moderator taking some kind of lead (hint, hint). Would suggest the following: Newbies guide - with do's and don'ts ( DO back up your poser character, morph, etc files before starting development; DON'T run scripts that require new lib/dll installs; etc... A script testing utility such as was suggested a few days ago to warn users of the presence of any commands that would be a problem (such as file I/O). A trusted script repository. Posters would send the script to someone (moderator?) who could then review/test it or send it out for review/test before it was placed out for download. Any more ideas????

I am wondering if before any scripts are put up, if we could have it that they have to be approved by someone(s) who knows it is safe. Just an idea, though it would delay putting up scripts. Or perhaps two types one safe and the other not tested?

I think the established members of the Poser community can be trusted. Anyone posting a script you don't know, take a second look.

Yes JeffH- easy for you to say. Many of you Poser Pro's can look at scripts and see what is going on. What about the rest of us Great Unwashed? What's preventing JeffR, Bushi2D and Masson from posting scripts later. Oh yah, that guy makes great Snake Scripts, I'll DL and run that one right now... Do you REALLY THINK most people would look under the hood and check every DETAIL of a Python Script before running them??? Of course, that would be the SMART thing to do. But I think you know that not everyone who owns a car is a professional mechanic... Check my earlier Poser post about how still VERY GULLIBLE most people are to Trojan and Worm planted messages sent to them, even after HUGE PUBLICITY and CONSTANT REMINDERS to NOT open and run these letter bombs...

All I'm saying is that if you see a script posted by an unfamiliar name, be careful and wait until someone in the know checks it out. I think we've all gotten your point; you can quit posting chicken little messages all over the forums now ;-)
