well heres something i'll get if i win the lottery. 8 opteron (16 cores!) beast of a server. Basically its arithmetic (sandra) benchmark is 170000+. oh well i can dream... ;>

Yeah, but no computer seems impressive anymore after reading about cell technology from IBM.. Basically one cell unit is 20x faster than the fastest dual core opteron... And cheaper by about 1/8 the price. If they go to desktop intel and amd are F-ed.

Yup, and I bet you STILL have to overclock the sucker to get any real speed out of it! =)

That IBM cell thing sounds neat. Sounds like they took the Motorola PowerPC chip and modded it. Also the technology is licensed/shared with Toshiba & Sony. So instead of just one company supplying the CPU, there's the potential of four suppliers for this type of chip. This will probably make it affordable too. :) Also note that the next X-box and both the PS-3 will be using that type of processor. The difference in how those platforms perform will be in the board architecture and operating software.

Aye, I find it amusing that both the X-box 360 and the Playstation 3 pack more punch than any, ANY home PC. But then again, the technology will hit Home PC's at around the same time. So, everyone : do NOT upgrade this year! Or at least until December, okay? All of our hardware will be nearly useless, once again, in six months... I can't wait to toss my Athlon 2000 out a window!

Anyone ever find out how much the Rendercube costs?

Erlik posted Sat, 28 May 2005 at 11:53 AM

Around 8000, the last time we looked.

Well, I'll start saving my pennies. ;-)

multicore, or mutiple cpus won't have any real effect on Bryce render times.

lordstormdragon posted Sun, 29 May 2005 at 1:13 PM

You're right, MallenLane, as long as by "right" one means "right-handed", and not "corrrect". Having multicore CPU's would divide your render times by the nmber of CPU's being used, a la Bryce Lightning... Pretty simple...
