Hi Diane!- I sure wouldn't buy another UMAX, if it is less than 5 years old they should support it. I like Microteks, especially the interface, I just bought a new one, it is a Microtek Scanmaker V6usl, 36-bit 600x1200 Dpi, Usb/scsi Interface, Pc/mac, Flatbed Scanner. They go for about $120 on the web. The include the SCSI card, SCSI is faster than USB, USB is (a lot) faster than parallel.
Diane- The new scanner is going to go on my new dual-boot PC, Win 2000 & Win 98. I don't actually it running yet, but I've got a 7 or 8 year old Microtec that still runs, and the school has a bunch of Microtecs, mostly the various flavors of the X6, they all work well. HPs are also nice scanners, but the interface has been dumbed-down to the point they are hard to use.

Not sure where to post this, but I would like some recommendations for a good scanner that is TOTALLY compatible with WinME. I have an older Umax 600p scanner that is quite good, but Umax is not supporting it for ME. I tried installing the drivers for 98SE, scanner worked great, but...I had major problems with booting, etc. I feel sure the driver was the problem--uninstalling stopped the problems (I had had problems with explorer with the original driver before a patch). I forgot to say this is on new computer that I chose to have ME installed instead of 98--it has its own issues, but has a lot of new features I like--except power options which render my Wacom Intuos tablet without driver when it comes out of hibernation or standby. I solved that temporarily by putting it 'on all the time', altho' I'd prefer to use hibernation--reported this to Wacom in case they need to change ME driver). I've installed it on my husband's computer (its parallel port), open the scanned image via network on my machine, but its sort of a pain. So--I'm thinking of a new USB one that will work with ME without problems. (BTW, the network is also screwed up--not sure why. A friend set me up--I can view his C drive, but his ability to view mine is gone--after the scanner install, even though I've gone over everything I can find--says I'm 'not logged on' LOL--the icon for my drive is not in his network neighborhood folder any longer). Anyhow--any suggestions, please. Jeff, if you feel this needs moved, please do. I just wasn't sure where to post it--since I use it pretty much for Poser related things, I posted it here). Diane
