I was goofing around with an umbrella you mount on a lawnchair. Total cost of this was around $5 for the spraypaint. Works pretty good,but now think I will go get a light setup with one of those bulbs and umbrella's.

Flash maybe too far from umbrella though.

The closer the flash is to the umbrella the sharper the shadows.

I don't have a EXT FLASH....but I've read that some people tape a piece of TP or paper over it to diffuse the light! Can't hurt to try!

I think the shots of the statues are really cool Doug! The shine doesn't bother me to be honest and it's not that noticeable either! I particularly like #10. Very classy shots u've got here!

i think the one in #8 is the best. the shine is much more noticeable to me in #9 & #10. In #8, there's just a little but i hardly notice. in #8, i love the shadows on the face on the right...think you nailed that one. shadows on the face on the left, however, might could use a little lightening up. yeah...#8 is the best if you ask me!!!! i also like the toning better on that one too!!!! keep it up!!! can't wait to see more studio work from you!

Not bad Doug! Personally prefer #9 over the others.... the specular highlights don't bother... #8 looks underexposed to me. The lighting and shadows are soft, which is fine, but the faces are lost in those shadows, to me the emphasis in that image is on the curtains.... #10 the foreground sculpture's face is in shadow.... and that is ok maybe, but the sculpture in the background in focus is also in shadow. If you want to get into lighting may I suggest a book that I have that is very straight forward, has lots of examples with drawings of the lighting setup and placements, and is IMO a great book for beginners.... It's not a book about flash per say, but geared towards studio work. Actually, after second thought, #9 is the best of them all indeed!! I agree with Chelle here!!

Thank you Michelle....that only by the first few pages of book seems perfect to want to get, and read. The more indoor set ups I try the more I think it becomes fun and more a challenge.

Looking pretty good to me also, but I am still a rookie at this. The umbrella does look to far from the flash. But a very creative solution.

Why not beeing cheap, I just started to construct my construction light studio. 500W works ok for digital photographing ... now only the models are missing, but I hope I can solve that too and not too expensive :) The link gives a good instruction but is unfurtunately in german.
