For starters, a free image editing program, Serif Photoplus. Appears to be a good alternative to Photoshop. Supports Photoshop-compatible plugins. They've got several other free programs.
Then, a free plugin to create panoramic images, PanoTools. Has versions for Windows and Mac. Windows version also has a plugin for GIMP.
Reptile is nominally a program to create "funky" tileable web backgrounds. Of course, "funky" textures can also be done. :-)
Microsoft-owned Creature House Expression is a free vector drawing program.
Finally, a free painting program, Dogwaffle. Download and enjoy.

Creature House Expression is awsome. you can use massive brushes to create massive natural backgrounds and the canvas will run on even a mediochre pc 'cos everything is vectorized.

Zbrush is pretty cool though. You can't model in Deep Paint and you can in Zbrush. Thanks for the links! Marque

Weird, downloaded the creature expressions but it wasn't an exe like it shows on the download page. Am I missing something? Thanks, Marque

Great links Erlik and Kemal!! I can't believe Deep Paint is now a free app, I've wanted it for a long time!! The other apps look very useful as well. :-)

I have a problem with Expression. That colour picker is magenta! Deinstalled and reinstalled and it persists. I had the same problem when I installed Photoshop 7, but a deinstall and reinstall fixed it.

Pakled, you can download Texture Processor. It appears to be even better than Reptile.
