Attached Link: Tintin's Rocket Ship Image

Houston we have a problem! Our ship needs to find a planet to land on soon.

A replica of my favorite Rocket Design since chilhood.
Yep! The one Herge drew for his Heroe Tintin.

So, if anyone wants to host this prop, just message me. :-)

Oh! Just peek at my Gallery image to see it...

WOW! That was my favorite two part animation when I was ahem much younger. I was soooo into the space program and anything that resembled a space ship..... I even hunted down and purchased the Tintin books so I could have the story. Great image!

I'd suggest PlanIt 3D as a suitable landing site ;)

dlfurman, I totaly hear you! Same with me. I think Tintin's adventures is one of the most translated BD out there. But, nothing beats hearing Cpt Haddock Swear in French! LOL Good Idea Slinger! And good Pun too! I shall email them! Marcus

This prompted me to dig out an old render I made way back when I was trying to model in Ray Dream Studio ( at least 10 years ago!). Those of you who have read "On a marchsur la Lune" will no doubt recognize this guy.....

is that Thompson or Tompson....? ;)

DominiqueB posted Thu, 16 June 2005 at 1:51 PM

That's Thompson / Dupond he has the straight mustache. Thomson /Dupont has the slightly curved out one. I have another render of the both of them floating in the airless moon exactly like in the book.

Love it!! Excellent likelyness! Even the Green Hair patches are dead on! Surprising what we can do with any tools at our disposal. :-) I used to model in Autocad. Well Done Dominique! I just realized that i didn't do the Hatch Door to the right proportions. I just watched the DVD of it. Also the Steps are retractable into the Hull. Small adjusments. Now, that i have DVD caps, i'll add the interior as well. That should make it more interesting for the Fans! ;-)) So, the release of the mesh will be delayed 'till early next week. :-( Here's a shot of the Rocket by itself. I did a basic Hatch entrance. I also added a subtle "Aztec" pattern to the texture. Gives it a more realistic look. Marcus

Khai posted Thu, 16 June 2005 at 7:10 PM

how about the cargo doors and crane?

DRACONIAN posted Thu, 16 June 2005 at 8:16 PM

Yes, Khai! That too is been added! :-) It's just a bit unclear where they are positioned. In some shots they are smack in the middle of 2 Landing Pods. And in other shots they are offset. Don't worry, i'm studying the caps carefully. Of course, there's no accurate way for me to measure everything. So, i'll try to go with my "modeling instincts" for the best extrapolation i can do. :-)) I did find a BluePrint(Fan Made) showing the compartment sections. This will help. Later, i'll do the Launching platform & the Lunar Buggy. I'm doing this in between other big projects, work & my social life. So bare with me. LOL Marcus

more

final one..

DRACONIAN posted Fri, 17 June 2005 at 8:54 AM

Thanks Khai! That's the plan i saw(But lowres). I have the books too. They are just wrapped up now for safekeeping. :-) So, the small hatch is on the same level as the Cargo doors. And i just realized that i can use the Checkers for size reference. Doh! Man, That Launch Platform has more tubing then i remembered. I'm going to have to use '6 sided' cylinders. Otherwise, that part will reach 150K polys easily... I'll post updates of my progress on Monday. Good Weekend All! Marcus

DominiqueB posted Fri, 17 June 2005 at 9:43 AM

You are making the launch platform too? Can't wait to see that finished up. 6-sided polygons should be okay for Poser which smoothes everything anyways.

DRACONIAN posted Fri, 17 June 2005 at 12:24 PM

Yep, DominiqueB! :-) Indeed! Usualy, the reverse is the problem. Have to bevel my edges so Poser doesn't curve my flat surfaces. I just redid the Cargo Doors to the proper size. I'm doing bits & pieces whenever i get a break at work... Also did a quick layout of the Launch pad. I Love doing such projects. I feel like a Kid playing with Legos... :-)) Later! Marcus

DRACONIAN posted Mon, 20 June 2005 at 4:37 PM

Just a quick peek at the Launch Platforms. Still need to add the Fencing,, Diagonal Rods, Elevator Grills(Doors). Also need to finish the Interior of the Cargo Bay, Crane. I will do the other interiors later. Draco

Closer shot...

DRACONIAN posted Mon, 20 June 2005 at 4:44 PM

Got an observation! If you look at the Wheels of the Platforms, it makes you wonder how they could move them away from the Rocket... So, Do i just replicate them in the same way? Or, do i rotate them 90 degres? Later! Draco

dlfurman posted Tue, 21 June 2005 at 1:04 AM

The gantry rolls in the direction of the wheels. So they'd just pull them back. I figure the platforms that extend out to the rocket, retract into the gantry, then they pull the gantry away. Those old cartoons should be put on DVD or at least re-broadcast.

This is really looking good, can't wait to see it all finished. You are going to have to animate it blasting off.

Dlfurman, i was thinking the same thing. So, there must be some rails on either side of those extended Walkways(That we don't see). And they are available on DVD(all of them), Got the Box Set right here. :-) Thanks Dominique! Well, i did make a few mechanical animations way back... Even with 8 sided Cylinders, those rods will reach 15,000 Polys. I'm still wondering how i'm going to make the elevator fences fold in Poser? Anybody got a trick for that? Just be patient with me. It's festival time here in Montreal(Jazz, FireWorks, etc..). In summer, i'm tend to go out more... ;-) Marcus
