Hi all, I'm trying to create a text effect and I'm having some trouble. I want to create some text that appears to be in perspective. What I mean by that is that it's larger in the front, and then gets smaller towards the end of the text string and appears to be going off into the distance. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks

dreamer101 posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 2:50 AM

Rasterize the text by right clicking on the text layer in layers palette and select Rasterize Layer then Edit > Transform > Perspective.

sokol posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 3:01 AM

Thanks, I've been trying that, but it doesn't seem to quite give the effect that I'm looking for. How would I get the text to look 3-dimensional then? Drop shadows don't seem to give the right effect for doing this?

I'm not sure what you want. Considering Star Wars just came out, you might be trying for that "famous" style. If you could post an example image of what you're trying to achieve, you might get a better answer. Cheers!

I prefer to use pictograms or pictorials. So be prepared for three or four images to come.

Okay?

Thanks for the help guys. You're on the right track, but I'm jut not getting it completely right. I've trierd to find pictures of exactly what I'm trying to do, (and I coulnd't find anything exactly right, but I found something pretty colose). I'm trying to create a movie poster, and I'm trying to get the effect of a cheesey old horror movie. So, I've posted someimages of what I'm trying to create. The 3-d spect of the text is also a little more dificult than I expected.

sokol posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 3:23 PM

Woah - sorry for the typos!

stew451 posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 4:52 PM

If this is what your going for. You can try and type your text, skew or distort however you want. Then select the move tool and in which direction you want to go then just merge the copies. Hope this helps. Stew451

don't know why it didn't upload. I'll try again.

cryptojoe posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 9:42 PM

Make sure the image is under 200K and in JPG format.

Be sure to put guides around the text when you are finished with the first step of distorting it.

Now select the text along the guides using the selct tool.

cryptojoe posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 10:09 PM

...like so.

cryptojoe posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 10:12 PM

Copy and paste it. Delete the previous layer.

cryptojoe posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 10:14 PM

You will now be dealing with an image instead of text.

Go to Edit > Distort...

cryptojoe posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 10:16 PM

Distort it any way you want. Then place guides around it so you know where it begins and ends. Then select this text and coipy it, and "Past Into"...

cryptojoe posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 10:19 PM

Now, on this layer, Select > Color Range

cryptojoe posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 10:20 PM

Click inside the text image you just pasted...

cryptojoe posted Sun, 26 June 2005 at 10:26 PM

Using the Paint Bucket tool, paint this text a contrasting color, like red.

Go back to Edit > Distort, and click on the corners of the layer image and then use the Nudge (up/down/left/right arrows) to line it up where you want it and you have a shadow behind the text.

Now you can "Copy Merged" this image into whatever you want.

If it must be Solid Text, there are other ways maybe, but to be honest, I just use Rhino and render the suckers instead of trying to use Photo Shop.

It's only 33KB and 320 x 120. I'll try again. Well it did it again don't know why.

To get the true block(3D) effect, I would do it in a 3D program. You could ask someone to donate some of their time to do it for you, if you dont have the software that is.

A couple good quick tuts for 3D text in PShop: http://webdesign.templatemonster.com/web/photoshop/tutorials/nice-looking-3d-text.4520.html http://www.photoshoptutorial.net/text_tutorials/page1/

For a great 3D Freebie (Trial Version) try [Rhino 3D](http://www.rhino3d.com). It's what I use.

Just be sure not to make a model and save it (you only get 25 saves on the demo) until after you stop by the Rhino 3D forum. The link at the top will get you there.

I or one of my Coordinators will be happy to set you up so you can render a picture.

If you still can't get it, don't worry, we'll make you a model, and set it up for you to download and render.

When the 25 saves in Rhino has been used, the only function that becomes disabled is the "Save Command" the rest of it remains fully functional, you can model, just can't save the models. You still can render, and save the image. Bring it over to Photoshop and do the post work!

Thanks, actually I already use Rhino. I guess that is a way to do this. thanks everyone.

Sans2012 posted Tue, 28 June 2005 at 2:37 PM

Nice! the only prob is, you would need those 25 saves just to get the text right lol. Can you export an object? more than 25 times?

I never intended to make art.

dreamer101 posted Tue, 28 June 2005 at 2:50 PM

Illustrator will do the job with the 3D Extrude and Bevel.

cryptojoe posted Tue, 28 June 2005 at 3:17 PM

@Sokol! Shame on you, I thought I recognized that name!

@Sans2012, if you have someone who knows the program guide you through it, you wouldn't need to save or export in order to render. Rhino comes equipped with two plug in renderer's; the standard Rhino Renderer and Tree Frog.

If you have a grasp on AutoCAD commands already, Rhino's command line takes all 500 or so of those commands as well. Extrude is a command you can type in, or find on the tool bar and drop down menu to create surfaces in. No need really, when there are two forms of text you can create in Rhino. One is a solid, and the other is the normal text used in dimensions which you can get to appear in your renders using the "Render Dimensions and Text" options in the Document Properties dialog window.

I forgot to include the text image done in Illustrator. It was a quickie.

sokol posted Tue, 28 June 2005 at 5:30 PM

Ahh, very cool, that is the look that I'm going for. How exactly did you do it? I'm not as familiar with Illustrator as I am with Photoshop. Is it part of the simple interface selections?

dreamer101 posted Tue, 28 June 2005 at 5:48 PM

3D Extrude and Bevel was added in Illustrator CS. It's just a matter of drawing a path for the text, type the text on the path, Type > Create Outlines, Effects > 3D > Extrude and Bevel then do a perspective with the Free Transform Tool.

cryptojoe posted Tue, 28 June 2005 at 6:43 PM

Wonder if that can be done in Photoshop CS ???

Yank My Doodle, It's a Dandy!

Sans2012 posted Tue, 28 June 2005 at 11:50 PM

cryptojoe, my question was, can you export in the demo version 25 times or more?

I never intended to make art.

cryptojoe posted Wed, 29 June 2005 at 8:31 PM

I believe that an export counts as a save, but I'm not certain.
