Subject: Goblin....My First Poly-By-Poly model.

Well, after oooing and ahhhing over people like Kolby Jukes and Hwasup Song's models, I decided to try the poly by poly method myself. I must say, it is fast, mostly because you're making the detail as you model as opposed to blocking out shapes and building up from them. I mean, it's my first attempt, so it's not stellar but it's good and showed me why so many like it. Thank you Silo! Wings can't really do this. Hexagon and many other poly modelers can but I only have access to Silo at the moment. So, have a look at the image above and tell me what you think. The eyes are a design thing and done on purpose, it's going to be a goblin creature and I'm trying to go for a more primitive, look.

It looks great, can you show a wire? Do you start with an area, say the mouth or nose and extrude edges from there?

Thanks. I started with the eyes, then I went into the nose and then the mouth. Once they were started, I combined them by merging verts. Afterward, I just went ahead and finished it up by adding polys/detail as needed. I still have a lot to do though. I'll post a wire soon.

looking good Teyon...have you ever used ZBrush?..these look like ideal models for taking to a higher level of detail. & do you ever animate these models? Cheers Stefan

Thanks. I'll be getting ZBrush on my next paycheck, actually. :) Stonemason, I am making these models for use with Poser though I may use some in XSI once I get my hands on it. For those who haven't seen, here's an update with a quick render in Poser.

good to hear you'll be getting ZB..I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do with it :) & XSI too?..I wish I had the time to learn that one..the animation features look very cool. this figure will look great with some sss on his ears Cheers

Excellent work on this one. I really do need to learn more on organic modeling. Until then I will do more mechanical models.

he's looking good Tey, I like the texturing. not the typical green that is so definately a fake creature. makes him much more realistic.

He's an ugly muthafu..whatsit :) If, having had my arm twisted, I had to make one minuscule critical observation, it's that he needs a little asymmetry to look more natural; right now the mirror-join is rather obvious, if you see what I mean. Very nice work though :)

Thanks. Yeah, I think I'll add some asymmetry once he's all done.I'm modeling in halfs so doing it now wouldn't work too well, lol. :) I'll be going a bit more pale on his skin tone and veiny once I get to the texturing stage but for test renders, this works okay. He'll look more scary once I put his teeth in and fnish his forehead.
