Hi blenderiansRepeating post at elysiun.com forums:
I'm starting a shortfilm, wich will be blender made. The idea is a drama based in the sacrifice of parents for their sons. Actors will be penguins in their natural places. Look will be (...I want...) near photorealistic.
Script and Storyboard are just done, excuse don't in english.

Today there is not blender work, but I'll post news.
Greetings

Sad story, but it could be very good when it's finished. Keep us updated when you get more done.

I'm thinking in static particles for fur. Someone knows what is better, they or the plug-in?

Looking good so far. The wings look like they're going to be difficult to rotate down into a more neutral position without a lot of distortion though, you might want to detach them, rotate, and reattach. For the feathers you might have better luck using planes with alpha transparency on the fluffier bits and relying on textures for the rest, rather than using particles or a plugin.

Penguins have "feathers" in tail, rest is very thin, like hair. I was thinking in something like "hair paint effects" of maya, wich has low cost for rendering.
Now time to learning about materials... and particles (at least a test :) ).

Relative VertexKeys.
A tech of animating vertex, used to facial animation.
Since a mesh you create different keys by moving vertex, then you animate them by IPO curves and sliders.
For details look at chapter 12 of blender guide.
About penguin next will be introducing or faking Specular component in feathers (halos). Some idea?

maybe add another mesh a little bigger of the furbody with an alpha map that just shows the reflections
