I'm not real sure what part of the owl that is, but it's a facinating shot! I would love to be "too close" to an owl. I've always wondered where you are to take such incredible shots of all these magnificent birds? This photo makes the owl look furry instead of feathery. Okay, I'll stop rambling....but this is really a neat shot, especially because you explained it. :)

Thank you, Jim, for posting this one in the Forum ! and for the explanation... so, when you say "too close" what does that mean ? 10m with your fabulous 500mm telelens ? Fantastic shot ! I like it too ! :~)

It is a neat shot, even if not what you planned. It captures the energy of the owl's leap and motion of the feathers and down. Save it!

GiMi53...Minimum focus on the 500 is 14.5 ft...!...to get this whole bird in, I would say distance would be about 30ft plus!!!...I can see now why sports and wildlife photographers love it!! One bad thing I can say about it is: I am neglecting the 100mm Macro lens as the 500 is now STUCK to the body..so, sorry for that! PS...where most people need to get closer to the subject, I need to move back!!!!...very powerful!!!!! jimbO

To convert 14.5 feet (ft) into meters (m), multiply by 0.3048, like this: 14.5 feet (ft) 0.3048 = 4.4196 meters (m). 30 feet (ft) 0.3048 = 9.144 meters (m)... so, I was not so far away with my 10m... lol ! You are a lucky with these fantastic lenses... keep posting !

Time for a new body too then.Thats my thinking when I have to change lenses up. hey at least it isnt close enough it would peck the lens, like a swan tried with mine.

Using the 300 mm telelens, trying to catch the flying storks I got the same unfortunate experience as Jim ([Nameleess Wildness](http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Y&Artist=Nameless_Wildness&Form.sess_id=48132222&Form.sess_key=1125518484))... think that looks great like that Michel :] these extreme in cam crops make these unique & can be done with style! i mean how many bird shots can we view before they start looking all the same (no offence!! :)

PS: This picture is not properly cropped or anything...it's just how it was taken but I did play with saturation and contrast trying to get a little more detail on the bird's head. sigh This was using 10x optical zoom if that tells you how far away he was. Probably a couple hundred feet? And it was a sunny afternoon around 2 pm I think...if that helps any. :-)
