In poser you can render against a picture so it looks like the object is in that picture, can Vue infinite do this? The HDRI files work great, but thats not what poser does, Im wanting to use basic photos just like the hdri stuff though.

You can use an image on a alpha plane. First create the alpha plane and then load your image. Place the alpha plane just behind your scene. You can also edit your atmo and make it image based lighting so the lighting of the scene matches your background.

thanks for the info, i knew about the alpha plane, buts its not the real thing like poser, or cinema, they have that ability to make a static picture background to work with, was wondering if that option was in vue anywhere

This is what I do...

1. Load the image as HDRI - see attached pic. As you see, the image is distorted, that's OK.

2. After doing this, do what creed says. Load the exact same map as an alpha plane, that way you get the real pic, but the benefits, of the lighting of the HDRI.

Does that make sense? I'm not good at explaining. Bottom line, once you pic your HRDI, use the exact same map as an alpha. OOPS...the above should have map ground unchecked & map upper atmos checked...sorry :(

Both Creed and Dlk are correct, this is the only way to do it in Vue, Vue doesn't support a static background image as a render option (I know, kinduv a pain sometimes when you just want the background image in there, especially for visualizations and photo meshings). There is an added feature in Vue 5 that makes this easier, you can make the alpha plane a billboard, which forces it to always face the camera, not a perfect solution but it does help.
