Hi all, not been around here for a while, so I thought I'd post this for you to take a look at, it's not quite finished yet, I need to add a couple of little details to the head dome and do some textures, but it's nearly there. I'm hoping to release it as a freebie when it's finished, and using a technique Little Dragon came up with, make the ear lights Mimic ready, so they'll light up when Mimic's used to add vocal stuff Rendered in P5, with a few procedural textures thrown in for good measure Cheers Billy

Very good.

Gareee posted Thu, 25 August 2005 at 9:35 PM

Is this the same one released over at vanishing point a few days ago? I note they also have a daveros chair.. and I know someone did a daveros morphs for some character.. it'd b nice to have that there along with the chair...

uh uh this one's more complete.. note the grooves on the head dome, the recesses round the "arms", the detail in the Eye Mount, the screws... this be the "hero" Dalek.. the one I want to use for close ups...

In post # 4, Gareee said, "I note they also have a daveros chair.. and I know someone did a daveros morphs for some character..." Both of those items are from me. The Davros morph is a face pose (.fc2) file that requires Capsces' "Boris for Michael" package. The chair I sculpted from scratch. As Khai stated, Billy-Home's Dalek is an original mesh, separate from JHoagland's .OBJ and .CR2. I told Billy how Little_Dragon rigged a robot model of mine to use Mimic and glide along a Walk Path. I sent him the robot figure for Billy to analyze. From his comments, it appears he will be incorporating those features into his model. Ironically, Little_Dragon had been looking upon one as well, using a mesh designed by Mark Pilbeam. Mark built his right after the first "leaked" pictures were published, so it differs (just) ever so slightly from the prop viewed in close-ups in the aired episode. Billy's appears to be a little more accurate. Sincerely, Bill

Well, bring it on! I like detailed figures! I think I have boris around here somewhere, when I was on a Capsces buying kick. I hardly look at Michael though, so I don't even remember any longer.

Hey Bill, Is there any way you can pass on that information about making robot's light up with Mimic? I'd like to see if I can achieve that effect with the B9 Lost in Space Robot.

It would be nice if everyone posted links to all the available Dr Who objects at Vanishing Point. The more objects there are available, strangely enough, the more objects people make for that series. If everything is in one place, people can see what's missing and make it. Difficult to do that when everything is spread across the net.

SteveJax:

Basically, I create additional mesh elements (with ambient materials applied for the glow effect), then hide them within the figure. A morph target will bring the glow-bits into view.

For Redfern's F.L.O. robot, I placed the glow-bit within her head, just behind a transparent grille. The OpenLips morph moves it forward, out of its hiding place.

For Pilbeam's Dalek, the glow-bits are scaled-down beneath the earpieces.

(Please excuse the colours ... I've only worked on the grouping, rigging, and morphs, and haven't done anything with the materials yet.)

It is a good idea and it works well.

SteveJax posted Fri, 26 August 2005 at 8:33 AM

Hrmm... the site's not loading. From your description though the B9 should be just as easy since his transparent grille is on his chest. It's supposed to light up red when he speaks.

The site did work ok earlier. Little dragon, I suppose that you could use any morph to be controlled by mimic as long as it is named correctly?

Ok, Next question, How do I add that extra bit to the B9? Load the OBJ add something to it named OpenLips and resave the OBJ or is there something more to it? A tutorial on this would be great!

looks great, I like it! definately want that:)

Very nice work. It does look similar to mine... then again, both models look like the Dalek in the new Doctor Who series. :) This one does have more detail than mine... and mine doesn't use P5/ P6 procedural textures. And the Mimic-ready lights on this model sound like a cool feature! Please add a link to it in the Vanishing Point Free Stuff section... or let me know if you need a site to host it. ;) --John

True. OpenLips usually produces some nice results, though.

Of course, one can configure Mimics 2-3 to use different morphs or channels altogether, even on different body parts. But I like to use the old guidelines established by Mimic 1 when developing new figures, since they'll work with the default settings, and for people who haven't upgraded their copies of Mimic.

Next question, How do I add that extra bit to the B9?

You must create the extra mesh pieces in a modeling application or something ... it might be possible to create the pieces with Poser's grouping tool alone by spawning new props off B9's grille section and then moving them into position.

But you'll need to give the glowing bit a different material, and resave this modified version of the B9 mesh with the new bits assigned to the chest group (or Main group, or whatever it's called on that figure). Then you could use Poser's magnets to create morphs for Mimic.

I've already got the grill section prop created with the use of poser's group tool and spawn target. Had to do a lot of work with it because originally it's all one piece with the main section. There are still a few small bit's that I wasn't ever able to get a hold of but they're well hidden in the body and shouldn't really be a problem. I'm lousy with Poser Magnet's though. I'm hoping that all I need now is the right check boxes ticked to export the new OBJ file and then how to create a new CR2 that addresses the new body part.
