Attached Link: Dot-Your-Spot now!

Hi all, Some of you may remember a feature that we called "Dot-Your-Spot" that we ran on the 3D Universe site a lo-o-ong time ago... Well, we've revived it and we'd love you to make a dot on the world map to mark where you live. Last time we ran it, we had over 1000 dots in the end! [No site login is required] http://www.3duniverse.co.za/dotyourspot/showmap.asp cheers, Steve

Nice, but it doesn't seem to be Firefox-friendly (no dots!) So I had to use IE (shudder). :)

stewer posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 11:15 AM

Doesn't work on any of the Mac browsers I tried (Safari, Internet Explorer, Opera).

rain posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 11:20 AM

I was able to do put myself on using IE (double shudder) but moving the cursor over the dots doesn't seem to do anything.

Casette posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 11:22 AM

Hey, nice... more or less I think my dot is in Madrid... IE works ok for me

The page requires absolute-positioned [div]'s. I'm not sure what browser's support that apart from the more recent IE's :-(

Dark_Whisper posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 11:28 AM

I've updated the code to show the names in the image mouse-over's too, so those who can see the dots but not the names should be able to see names too now... :-)

Gareee posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 11:46 AM

I added my dot, but it didn't place it on the map. Maybe a useful update to this would be to move it to a database set for Google Earth? For those that haven;t grabbed it, Google Earth is a free programs that uses satillite imagery, and elevation mapping to locate and mark places on earth. It'll do fly bys, and will even create a virtul trip to the selected locations. You can even input your address, or city, and it will locate them for you. I input my address, and we are next to a water tower, which shows up very nicely on the map! More populated areas, or points of interest, have higher resolution imagery, to the point where you can see trees and shrubs in a park! And being able to rotate the view, and see things with their elevation is just amazing. Once you add the location, you can save the personal database and email it or create a link to it for others to look at. Be forewarned though.. you'll easily spend HOURS finding locations, and viewing them from different angles, and using different overlays like streets, waterways, or buildings in cities.

I added myself with firefox, but couldn't see the dots. IE shows the dots, but no mouse-over screen names. It's pretty cool to see where everyone is. :D bB

Gareee posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 12:17 PM

Here's a sample I did (with pretty low res sat imaging.) It shows a lake nearby (about a mile across), the local walmart, my home (about 4 miles away), and the blue ridge parkway (about 5 miles away from my home).

Gareee posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 12:19 PM

Oh! BTW I used a photoshop filter for the sky, and the mountain haze. My house is elevation 3,000 feet, and the parkway's elevation at that point is about 4,000 or so. (guestimate).

TrekkieGrrrl posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 12:41 PM

:o( I clicked the map but it didn't add me. And I DID abandon Firefox in favour of IE *more shudder* but that didn't help.

But here's my dot on GoogleEarth :O)

Gareee posted Tue, 30 August 2005 at 1:32 PM

Have you played with the tilt up/down function yet? (It took me a while to discover that one.) it's what gives you the elevation type look. You can also chnge the scale from 1 to a higher number as well, to exaggerate the elevation differences. If you select your location, you'll also get a long and latitude setting.. if you post that, others can just inout that data, and google earth will whisk you away to your location. How much detail can you see on your area? I can make out a water tower about 80 feet across. (Not real high res detailing here.) Check out grand canyon, az New orlenas (if you want to see what the city used to look like before the hurricane), or seattle washington, Chicago Ill, or New York City for very hi res scans. Just friggin amazing. I could even see my Mom's old house in Bay Village, Ohio, and make out the room she added onto the house. (it looks like someone tore the garage down though.)

if anyone wants to add my location to Google earth, here's a link to my KMZ file: Just save it, and click on it, and it'll zoom goggle earth to my place! (BTW GE tip: there's an option to increase the res, slower DL speed but higher res.) The way I got this file, was to email the location to myself, save and rename the file, and then load it into GE.

Well, I added my dot, but the display doesn't work for me, so I can't see anything or do anything more. shrug The problem isn't the CSS, it's the javascript. bonni

12rounds posted Wed, 31 August 2005 at 7:29 AM

Yup. The problem here is with the JavaScript (or actually JScript - Microsoft's own version of Netscape's JavaScript). The code is using old legacy document.all -referencing instead of the recommended document.getElementById -referencing (that is part of the DOM standard that came to be something like 5 years ago and is supported by all current browser manufacturers). In essence the code is written in old proprietary Microsoft code and will not work in most non-IE -browsers. Anyways ... I managed to put my dot in there with IE5.5 ... arrgh I also see some dots are closer to the North Pole than mine :)

TrekkieGrrrl posted Wed, 31 August 2005 at 6:36 PM

Tiny, you're in Sweden, right? :o) And Gareee, not on an island. On the peninsula. And yep, it's Denmark as Xantor said :o) Aarhus, to be exact. Sneaky with the kmz file. I gotta try to make one of these as well :o)
