Hi, having been a terragen fan for a while I finally got brave and got my hands on Bryce 5!

IM LOST - right from the beginning.

I have d/l a few castles and freebies from here but whenever i try to open or import the folders appear empty!

Can anybody help this absolute newbie to Bryce by suggesting some REALLY basic tutorials that I can use to learn my way around.

I see so much fantastic stuff from all of you and am impatient to get going! But stuck as soon as I open it up!

Many thanks in advance!

Did you unzip your models and save them to a folder? Once you unzip them you should be able to go to the dropdown menu and under "file" you'll see "Import Object". Locate your folder where you saved your model and the file name should appear there, select it and your model(s) should import to Bryce.

First off Bryce imports .obj or 3Ds formats only I believe. If the folders appear empty, perhaps your models aren't in either of those two formats. There are plenty of great tuts right here on 'rosity. Check out Tutorial > Bryce at the top menu of your 'rosity page. www.brycetech.com has tons of tuts. If you go to File > Import Object, and your files are in the right format you should be able to import it no problem. Once your model is in your scene. You may want to click on the little 'E' and click on 'Unsmooth'. Bryce automatically smooths .objs. Then click on the 'M' to apply a texture or material to it. Feel free to ask more questions.

not to mention .dxf as well.

Bryce will import practically any format besides .max and a few others. Don't have time to list what it will import but it's many more than has been mentioned here. What format are the models you are trying to import and what import menu are you using? (file or object)

Thanks for all your replies. I appreciate it! It seems that most of the images I have saved so far are called Bryce5 Object Preset [obp?] files and a few are Bryce5 scene files. Try as I may when I go to import..they just don't show! No idea what I have done wrong...a setting somewhere maybe? I did manage to render a few basic shapes and give them that high shine feel which is great but that seems to be all I can do right now. Thanks too for the tut links - off to check them out next. all help is very much appreciated - what a friendly forum! hugz

If it is a scene file then all you do is open it in Bryce If it is an actual Bryce object file then you have to import it through the Create area actually in Bryce. If you click on the flippy triangle next to the create you will open up the area where the Bryce objects are kept. And you can IMPORT and object into that area.

well out of all these posts only Bea pointed this person to the one place for importing the models they have ;) When Bea said click on the .br5 scene file it will open in bryce for you, if you still have troubles doing it that way go to File/open then select the .br5 scene file and click on open..it should work fine that way for you. You can also open Bryce 3, 4 scene files that way if you come across any.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

The attached link is to the BEST beginner tutorials on the web (imho). I learned with these and they explain the most rudimentary moves. Be aware that they are for the real beginner only but the one on animation may be for anyone who has not tried animating with Bryce yet.

RubyDancingmoon posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 6:52 AM

wow thank you all so much for the input. Thanks to Burpee too. I checked out that site and it was EXACTLY what i needed! BASIC!! LOL Managed to follow them and even just did my first simple animation woohoo! I have one question though... how do I get rid of that base that appears all the time? I was following the tut for doing lettering and it said to use the slider in the editing page. "pull the bottom up and the top down" but when i did the whole slider moved not just half and half as the tut shows either that or i lost the text... or I still had the base behind the letters....am I missing something? Many thanks for helping me to get started! hugz

Burpee posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 11:50 AM

That base slider is tricky :) Try grabbing it at the end where you want to disappear...in this case the bottom. You can also grab it near the top and chop off the top of the mountains (objects) to create mesas. If you are grabbing it near the middle, you'll just move the entire slider. Also make sure to change your ojbects to "solid" or you'll get outlines instead. GL!
