I am working on a character for whom I need a turban. While there are some very nice packages out there to buy, most of them are far beyond my needs and I don't have any money anyway. I have searched and searched for a freebie one, but alas, all in vain, and I can't model at all.
I'm not too fussed, but what I want is something along the lines of what this guy is wearing:
The model I want to put it on is Mike 2, but I imagine something like this would be very easy to resize to just about any figure.
If anyone wants to take me up on this, here is my proposal: if you could do the modeling (and maybe the UV mapping as you're likely to be able to produce a far more sensible map than I could), I will texture it, so that P4-P6 users could use it, and then we could pop it up into FreeStuff for everybody.
Any takers? I can't be the only person in the world who wants a turban prop! Must walk dogs now... I'll check for replies when I get back!

Hi Strangechilde. I'm afraid I'm not going to be of much help (I can model a little, but I'm not very good at it...) But you state: "I'm not too fussed, but what I want is something along the lines of what this guy is wearing:" I see no picture.. If you have one, attach it to a new post. Maybe an indication of what you actually wanted would help? After all there are several style of "turban" (I'm sure that the wearers have dfifferent names for all the different styles, but in English, "turban" covers a great variety. Just like we only have one word for snow...) Cheers, Diolma

Diolma - there is a pic up there, not sure why it's not coming up when you view it ? if I get a chance later I'll have a play, but my modelling skills aren't brilliant either I have to say - will let you know if I come up with anything, but wouldn't hold your breath for it cheers Sean

Oh, dear. I wonder how many other pics I've missed. I'm using Mozilla ('cos I'm paranoid), so maybe that's the reason I (still) can't see a pic.. Maybe it's embedded in the HTML, and Mozilla can't sort that. (I'm NOT going back to IE if I can possibly help it.. ) But if Stangechilde would care to post a new entry and attach the pic (using "Attach File" in the "Post reply" box), then I should see it..:-)) I may not be the only one who can't see it.. Cheers, Diolma

Actually, a turban would not be on the easy side, no wraps would be easy but would not look good, even with a good texture and bumps. Displacement might work for the details, but I still think you would need a basic turban shape. And as said before, there are Sikh turbans, Egyptian turbans etc. and since it's a cultural thing, I wouldn't want to put that amount of effort into something that might offend someone. Your photo reminds me of the Sikh variety, but I'm ignorant of the whole topic really. And I would need to find a photo of the back of the thing, which might be hard to find. I might have to ask someone to photograph him, or learn to wrap one myself.
Could I interest you in a nice fez? ;) That would be easy.
But I'll see what I can do. I'll play around with it, I'm thinking that I could use a turban prop too, and that I'm not alone.

Thank you both. Alexic, that's quite true: there's a great deal of cultural significance, and for myself I am quite ignorant of the details. There are quite a lot of Sikhs where I live, and to me in the picture I posted it looks similar to the turbans I see on Sikh men... maybe that's why I like it. I can see if I can find a few more photos. Pdxjims, thank you! That's very generous of you. If I do retexture it (and if the texture is any good at all) I will certainly send you a copy. That's a wonderful David texture in the picture you posted. Is that also yours? I confess I don't have David (and I've already called in my Christmas present!).

Thanks bunches!!! If you'll PM me your e-mail, once I get it all together (I must find all those little blank spots in the map, grr!) I'll send you everything I've done. Thanks again for the model. It's turned out to be exactly what I needed!

I knocked up a quick morph target in Extreme Morph to sort of bouf the turban up a little bit, since I was looking for something a bit bigger and the model took it very well. A side-view, pre-bump preview:
