Subject: Help please: retexturing a prop

I've just forgotten how to do all this stuff... So: I have this prop, and I want to make a new texture map for it. Before I do that, though, I would like to change the mapping from a split box map to a spherical map. I have UVmapper Classic for Mac, so I should be able do that easily enough. But since it's just a .pp2 file, it doesn't have an .obj in the Geometries folder (or if it does, I can't find it!). How can I assign a new map style to the prop? Thanks!

tried exporting the prop to .obj then mapping that ?

I did export it as an .obj, yes, and I can remap that no problem. But the remap only applies to the exported .obj file, not to the prop as it pops up in Poser, because it's a completely separate file. Should I just import the remapped .obj file as a new prop? I think that should work...

H'm, now this is weird. I tried importing the remapped .obj, but it won't take .jpg files I create in Photoshop. One test file I made for it simply won't load. Others wil load, but they won't render. Bizarre.

Here's the sequence I follow: 1. Export the prop as OBJ, checking only "include group names". 2. Run it through UVmapper. Usually the Box map works best for my things, but that doesn't mean much. 3. In UVmapper, save the model (leave everything checked as UVmapper gives you) 4. Still in UVmapper, save the template. 5. Bring the template into Photoshop. 6. Add layers to paint the colors and details. 7. Hide the original template layer and save the visible result as JPG. 8. Import the UVmapper-made OBJ into Poser and apply the texture. Have you missed step 4, perhaps?

In Windows at least, if you drag-and-drop a PP2 (or any other file with embedded geometry) onto UVMapper, it will read the bits which look like an OBJ and ignore the rest. I don't know if the Mac version does the same, but it's worth a try and will save some steps if it does.

Thanks, Ockham. I didn't miss Step 4... I don't know what I did, but I must have done something wrong. Unfortunately the Mac version of UVMapper doesn't work as a drag-and-drop. Maybe you have Pro? There is as yet no Pro for Mac (but the day that there is, I'll be begging my usband for toys). I suspect I'm just a bit rusty. I'm going to read the UVMapper tutorials again and try your step by step routine, Ockham. Thanks!

Try using the file open function as usual--don't know about Mac but in Windows you can select show all file types (instead of just .obj). Then see if it will load the .pp2 correctly. You can also export the .obj or extract it from the prop and change the .pp2 file to use the external .obj. The link has a tutorial on this.

Thank you. I have a tendancy towards freaking out if I'm asked to use a text editor to modify a 3d file, but I will certainly have a read through. :)
