What do you think: There's a special deal right now at e-frontier to get the french edition of P6 for 207, which is a fairly good deal, but money's pretty tight right now, and on the other hand, Poser artist ( wich used to be Poser4, so I was told) is only 99 in stores. I would only use Poser work to integrate in Vue Infinite, so I don't need fancy rendering options, but I would animate ( in the future, just not now) in Poser and import the animation in Vue. Do all the conforming and dynamic features work in P4? What is not implemented in P4 that's cool in P6, besides rendering options? Do all the figures like V3, Aiko, Micheal, Hiro... work in P4? Thanks all.

From experience with P4 and P5, I can offer some help. In P4, V3(and other DAZ models) will work just fine. However, P4 doesn't have dynamic cloth or hair like P5/P6. Plus the material room for P5/6 is miles ahead of P4 as far as texturing options (displacement maps, etc). OTOH, it seems that P4 is still the most stable of all Poser versions, given the large number of problem threads involving versions 5 & 6. And as far as rendering options, I can't speak for P6 but, in P5 the Firefly engine is basically a waste of coding (IMO). Nine times out of ten it-just-does-not-WORK! Great concept(raytraced shadows, reflections) but, ya better get a good supply of Valium before trying to use ol' Firefly seriously ;) Honestly Bruno, unless you really need the dynamic stuff or the fancy lights(AO/IBL in Poser6), I'd say go with Poser4 (Artist). Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input cyberscape, as I said, I don't need fancy rendering options, but I might want the dynamic stuff. As for materials, i don't need too much control, since I will do that in Vue. Diffuse, bump are all I need, and no shaders Vue won't understand.

P6 offers the following features over P4: Dynamic cloth - very, very useful in animations, also very useful for stills when a character is wearing long, flowing cloth (skirts, dresses, capes, blouses) Dynamic hair - mainly useful for animations. For stills, transmapped hair that also works in Poser Arttist is better. Multiple runtimes - helps you organise when you have a large amount of Poser items. Hierarchical library - a lifesaver when organizing folders. You are going to love that. Python scripting support. There's a whole load of handy scripts out there, most of them free, that are a great help when setting up a scene for export to Vue. If Poser Artist is just a relabeled Poser 4, chances are that it'll be very unreliable on machines with more than 1 GB of RAM. P6 plays much nicer on powerful machines. OpenGL preview - if you have a decent graphics card with OpenGL 1.5 support manipulating your cameras is much smoother. Not needed for rendering, very useful for getting poses right.

Thanks svdl, you just sold P6 to me! Hadn't thought about OpenGL, but it's really a must for me. Dynamic stuff too. And py. Oh, gosh, I'm not that rich right now, have to check when this special offer on the french edition ends. Or maybe, I could find P5 somewhere, must be cheapr now that Poser6 is out?

If OpenGL is a must, you don't want Poser 5 - it doesn't have OpenGL support.

Ok, just downloaded it! I made a mistake, though, I wanted the box, so I would have a printed manual! Oh, and btw, the french edition special wasn't so special after all, exactly the same price, except included was "Winter queen" and Shade 8 LE. Went through the features of shade8 standard, and wasn't impressed, so I guess LE isn't much of interest. I'll stick to Cinema4D ( even if I have the old free version!) Expect numerous messages asking for help!
stewer posted Wed, 12 October 2005 at 5:42 PM
Shade 8 LE has global illumination, which Cinema4D CE doesn't have. So it might still be useful for you.
bruno021 posted Wed, 12 October 2005 at 5:57 PM
Yes, but I use Cinema for modelling objects that I need for my Vue scenes, and Vue handles GI and radiosity, plus I know how C4D works, no need to learn another software. Except my new Poser 6!

Don't worry about not having the P6 (or P5) printed manual .. they're both fairly unhelpful except for the basics. And can be confusing a lot of the time. Read the Poser tuts (see "tutorials" right at the top of the page) here at 'rosity, and also grab anything that you can find in anywhere in 'rosity by Dr. Geep. (also answers to just "geep". One of the best tutors for Poser around... gets you through essentials with witty, understandable graphic tutorials. Save them to hard-disk ('cos they'll come in invaluable later..) And if none of that helps, post threads here. (It always helps, if you have a problem) stating which version of Poser you are using, and posting screen-shots of the problem.. Welcome to the addictive, chaotic, frustrating, satisfying (all applicable at various times) world of Poser:-) Cheers, Diolma

Thanks a lot Diolma! I'll remember Geep!!! Can't forget a name like this, now can you?
