Subject: Terragen Realism

I currently own Vue Infinite and like it a lot. I was wondering if someone could explain why Terragen Clouds and Landscapes are so much more "Real" looking? I just was wondering if someone could answer this? Please don't turn this into a debate between Vue and Terragen. That's not my intention here. I am simply asking because I don't understand. Are they using a totally different technology than Vue or what is it?

Procedural terrains and textures already support to get a more terragenish look. I saw some amazing works here already in the Vue Gallery. It seems to be tricky though. Couldn't get to work it myself and didn't find any hints or tutorials regarding this issue.

That's Terragen2, which is forthcoming. No-one suspected about EcoSystem before it was launched upon us, E-On just like to keep things close to their chest is all. Whatever E-On has as "forthcoming" may blow TG2 out of the water, you just never know :)

vue has some features but it lacks in some areas severely.
The star generator is the worse I have ever seen. The glow effect is useless in many situations.

It's clouds can be tweaked to look better but never as good as Terragen. That is why most pictures in the vue galleries use photgraphs of clouds as their backround.

Solid growth trees are ok but suffer from many problems especially when used in ecosystems.

The folks at e-on aim high but always miss the mark usually leaving their software in beta and then moving to the next version.

Support at e-on never answers why something doesn't work and their best advice usually is try the latest beta update.

In short e-on seems under-staffed which causes most of their problems.

As for vue 6 please.... fix vue 5 1st before the upgrade.

I like to use Terragen, but it's very limited which is why I always come back to Vue. Can't add trees or rocks, or objects - you apparently will with TG2, but I don't know how it'll be implimented. For now I have to do all objects in PS - which come to find out drives many in the TG community crazy. It seems that many specifically want the TG "look" of the render and feel it is marred by postwork. Their (TG that is) goal was to figure out how to make the qualities of light for an outdoor environment as realistic as possible. However - I disagree with the quality of TG clouds when you try to make them thick (3D vertical thickness). That's when it tends to be "very unforgiving" - an excellent description from someone in one of the TG threads. My main problem with Vue is that ALL their materials start with an opacity of %40 - this drives me nuts! In the real world NOTHING has an opacity of %40 - so it makes straight renders look "cartoonish" and unrealistic. When making an ecosystem with plants (and rocks, frankly) I'm unable to lower the opacity and have to make more adjustments in PS - BTW, if anybody knows how to bypass this I'd LOVE to hear it!

I too was wondering about this, and I think there are ways to improve the quality of terrains in Vue. Procedural is certainly one way to go, but I've also tried using the resolution doubler on the terrain editor. I think by raising the resolution of your terrains, you can get more detail in them. Combine that with good textures and I think we can come close to the terragen ones. Check out the link for a really detailed terrain in vue.
