Hi everybody, I'm Andrea from italy. I'm trying to learn to use Carrara and I have a problem: I model my objects in Carrara with shaders etc., then I wnato to export them in .OBJ format to re-use them in Bryce 4.1. When I use the export function of Carrara, the dialog asks me the format of the texture, the corrdinates, the path etc, but Carrara DON'T write the .BMP (or .JPG) texture file at all, and when I import the .OBJ file in Bryce it is un-textured. The question is: How can I export the texture of an object and save it in .BMP (.JPG, .TIFF etc) to use it in Bryce. I hope that it's possible, because it seems to me impossible that Carrara had a so great shader editor but it's impossible to export the texture. Thanks for your answers and excuse me for my bad English

Welcome Andrea from Italy ! :) I've been playing with the texture export functions of Carrara lately and found it was crappy . The process is long and buggy . Also, i can't get it to export all channels . If anybody knows the problem, i'm all ears ! Anyway, what i do on my PC is : i save as .obj, enable the "options" checkbox . Then in the options dialog, i check "convert procedural shaders to textures" and choose my texture resolution . Does that work for you ? litst

No, it doesn't work at all! But where (in what path) do Carrara creates the texture file? In the same path of the .OBJ?

I've made a try with a simple shader on a sphere . I've saved as .obj with .jpg textures, resolution of 128x128 . It saved the textures in the same directory of the OBJ file . Are you on PC or Mac ? Do you have the pached version ( 1.01 ) ? litst

I'm on a PC and I have the patched version, what are the other settings that you use in the export window? (do you check all the check box), have you tried to export the texture in higher resolutions?

Here are my settings . It has exported the color texture and another one ( highlight, maybe ?) . I hope you're not in a hurry ! ;) litst

Gosh, it doesn't export the texture at all!!, It creates only the .OBJ file and a file withe same name with extension .MTL (seems to be a Bryce 4 file). I don't really know what to do.....

That's strange . I don't know, maybe a software configuration issue or something ... You can always try to ask to Eovia, but they don't really support Carrara at this time . Sorry :( litst

The export texture function seems to work fine except that the file extensions are not written to the end of your file (at least in MAC OS) so you need to add that yourself. Carrara will write the texture maps according to the mapping mode & faces specified in the shader. Anywhere from 1 to several maps could be drawn. When brought into Bryce or Poser they should apply themesevlves automaticlly. I think that the 3DS format works better for Bryce though. Even grouped objects work well with seperate maps for each part.

dragonlord posted Tue, 20 March 2001 at 12:49 PM

I've tried to export in all the supported formats, but the only objects that Carrara creates, are the .XXX (.OBJ, .3DS, etc.) and a file with extension .MTL which size is 1 KB!!!. I've tried to search all over my Hard Disks for file with the name of the exported objects with no extension, but I haven't found non of them. My question is: could this problem be caused by Bryce 4.1 or by Poser 4.3? Infact when I export from this programs in .OBJ format, I always found a .MTL file with the same name of the Object......

litst posted Tue, 20 March 2001 at 3:13 PM

It does not export shader with the name of the object with me, but with the name of the shader ! Maybe that's why ... The .mtl file has nothing to do about it, for sure . litst

dragonlord posted Wed, 21 March 2001 at 12:26 PM

Ok, but how could I know the name of the shader? And in what folder does Carrara saves it?

litst posted Wed, 21 March 2001 at 12:58 PM

If you didn't rename the shader, it's named "shader" . The textures are saved in the same folder as the OBJ file . litst

twillis posted Wed, 21 March 2001 at 1:13 PM

Silly question... how does one rename the Shader?

dragonlord posted Wed, 21 March 2001 at 1:24 PM

At this point i think that my version of Carrara has some unknown bug, infact I can't find any file named "shader" in my disks.....What a disaster!!

litst posted Wed, 21 March 2001 at 3:12 PM

Andrea, try to create a new folder and export your file with all the options in that folder . What files do you get there ? .obj and .mtl, i guess ... Also, when you export, Carrara should show an information window at the top of the creen that says something like " exporting shader ..." . Do you have that ? Terri, to rename a shader, select it it the sequencer tray and rename it in the properties tray . You have to be in the assemble room . It's basically the same for all objects and master objects . litst

dragonlord posted Wed, 21 March 2001 at 3:44 PM

I've tried to create a new folder, and the result is the same, i found only the .OBJ and the .MTL and no windows appears on the top of the screen. I've tried to unistall Carrara and install it back (with patch too).......nothing to do!!! I've tried to export in all the other formats but Carrara doesn't create the texture file....

Thanks, litst.

You're welcome, Terri ! Andrea ... i'm stuck ! I'd suggest to report it to Eovia and hope that bug will be fixed for the patch release . Sorry ... :( litst

I just found the problem. It won't export multiple shaders or textures on an object. You will need to delete all of the shaders, textures, and default except one you want to keep and export it in bmp or jpeg format with obj export option. Waldoo
