Poser sometimes has problems importing .3ds format. When I run into problems what I usually do is load the model in somehting like Deep Exploration, then convert it into .obj format then import that into Poser.

Another option, though I prefer to make most of my models from scratch in Maya, then import them in obj format, Sence you are working with a 3DS format I suggest loading it into another modeler/render like MAX, Maya etc, Rhino supports 3ds formats, and they have a fully working trial too, so that is a suggestion as well

Do a Google search and get PoseRay. It's free and does a good job of importing and converting .3ds files to .obj (plus tons more functions).

Wow ! Many thanks lmckenzie, for taking me back to my Pov-Ray roots with that link! It's been 6-7 years since I mucked around with that in command line mode, those days (how I did that, I cannot imagine, my being such a non-techie and all that).
I surfed that PoseRay link and re-connected with my Pov-Ray heritage. Nowadays, I'm mostly using Poser6 and sometimes DS, and I think I need to catch-up on Persistence-Of-Vision.

You're welcome infinity10. PoseRay does make PovRay a bit more human accessible (in addition to being a nice conversion and geometry modification tool). You still have to muck with code to really get the most out of it though.
