Hello all, I am a little new to bryce and do most of my modeling in Truespace, but I love the textures in bryce. I have been asked to produce a set of images for some childrens books and I now find that I need to have fur, I have tryed to use a hair plugin in truespace but it came out looking like a 1990's computer game, so I tryed some texures in bryce. this is ok, but real fur effects would look so much better. I am a poor man so I can not afford Maya or anything like that that has fur built in. are there any plugins for bryce that can produce a fur effect? If so what are they? Please help, thanks

Fur? Well Pdjy or Flak would know. If it is really needed I would go for a volumetric version. Use a volume material version of the object that is slightly larger than the original object as to which volume material to use that is another story. If you really master the Deep texture editor you can get something done. One of the things I have been doing to models in Wings is to select verticies and do an extrude on them(usually free and then pull the extrusion in the wanted direction) . I really don't knwo how to do it. You could get a good fur type releif using some bump map like Golden bump. What is the current polygon count of the models. If noth to high then you can go the Wings route. Bryce can handle a lot of polygons but wings is a bit more limited. Good luck. Good luck. The volume approach there is a grass volume shader that might work. Volume materials take a long time to render But the results are often worth it I almost always use them.

I've been trying to get some fur effect with bryce.. with no result as the volumetric textures only gives a good result when applied to a primitive "sphere or cube".. If you need to get some fur on a character, then you got to make it using "postwork" with a software such as photoshop.

Here is how I usually do I make render of a shape with a basic volumetric cloud shader. I import the image in photoshop, make a new layer without the background and i start to give the "fur" effect using the "finger" tool (with a 50% pressure) I start from the border and finish in the center of the "character" Then I draw the eyes (or I imort an image with the corresponding mask image) I add some shadow on the fur with a smoth brush.

You could maybe download some Poser Textures for animals and apply the jpgs ??????

I did this once, it's made of a zillion of spheres with a "eyelashes"-like texture. It's a bit complicated and increases rendertimes to death, but maybe you can optimize it, and use it. vasq (thinking that pidjy's creature is really really really good looking)cobwebdesignz posted Fri, 25 November 2005 at 11:48 AM
eyelashes like texture??? nice texture, love the image but 3days WOW

Postwork is probably the way to go,............for me anyway,.......I use Photoshop7 and some hairbrushes by Bice(available in 2D freestuff section) go take a look at my image called "Rivals" in my gallery,.......the fur on the Bear was done in this manner."Any club that would have me as a member is probably not worth joining" -Groucho Marx

Thats one hell of an image, I will look at those brushes, nice one thanks :)

@sackrat Amazing postwork skills. I think anyone wouldn't find a plugin or programme to mimic as well as that fur. well done Marc (Most probably wrong but, would cost an arm and a leg!)

What a great thread. I love the pics. Sackrat that is a awsome pic. Vazquez that is something like what I was originally thinking my daugheter loved your duck(her words not mine) . I am learning a lot abotu approaches to this. I am getting into organic modeling so it is soemthing I am very interested in.

Only good way to do it in bryce is to tweak a volumetric material until you get the right results.
