You could paint your road in the terrain editor with the brush, or better, create a filter in the terrain editor to make your road.

Javil posted Sat, 03 December 2005 at 6:22 PM

OK but must i do that before or after de ecosystem? And can you explane a little what you mean about the filter iam not familiar with that.. thx

you could put a road shaped object on/in the terrain, make it invisible and then set your ecosystem to decay near forieng objects. in the case of the pic i just actually used two cubes to make the road. love esther

So this is what I'm working on right now. The road took me about 60 minutes to make using Paint Shop Pro 8.1 and Vue 5 Infinite.

You could try using my Roadmaker script. However, it can be difficult for beginners as well more experienced users. If you try it out and have any questions, I will to help you through this thread or through IM.

Roadmaker is a Paint Shop Pro 8.1 script and is available here:

http://tidbit.freefronthost.com/objects/index.htm

Also I have a couple of tutorials. This one is for Roadmaker:

http://tidbit.freefronthost.com/tutorials/roadmaker/

This is one is for Vue 4 users on mapping roads:

http://tidbit.freefronthost.com/tutorials/terrainmap/index.htm

Lastly, Roadmaker creates maps that you can easily texture with ecosystems. There are a few Roadmaker materials at the site with the maps already referenced. Charles

...or you could just get J Trout's Road Construction Kit and Mountain Road Kit and just LAY DOWN some ROAD!

**** SEE Bottom of Freebies for the Road Kits. *****

-However, you will need Poser- as the roads, guard rails, etc. are all posable. I also use J Trout's Road Kits for making Railways (track not included).

bruno021 posted Sun, 04 December 2005 at 4:31 AM

In the terrain editor, you have an icon called "filter altitude" you can use for a regular terrain. If you use a procedural terrain, this filter is located in the "proc" ta, right under the shpere. To edit this filter, right click it or ctrl/click it. Then click on the curve and click "new keypoint". This will create a point along the spline, create another one and make the line joining the 2 points horizontal. Click preview and see what is does to your terrain shape. refine the filter if need be. Check the image I provided.

Does the EULA of J Trout's Road Construction Kit and Mountain Road Kit allow commercial render? Love esther

It just says "for personal use. do not distribute again".

so has anyone emailed him to see if personal use includes commercial renders, or do you just assume that it does? Love esther

If you are not sure it would be best to e-mail him. He's also a Renderosity member- so you could also try IM'ing him- ---JTrout is Hiroyasu Nakatani---and a regular Free Stuff contributor...

estherau- If he says "not for commercial use" then you might consider this commercial Poser road prop in the REN Store...

Ok thanx for the help Bruno!

Veritas, something is not clear yet, what is this set exactly? A object? A material? Sorry maybe i'm a newbie, but i never buy extra stuff, i really want to create myself, so if i need a road i draw myself one. The problem is that i don't know how to place a road to a terrian and that the road is following the hights and low of the terrian. Thanx for your help!

Bruno, i will try the filter option soon,

Javil

Javil- If you have a Paint program (like Photoshop or whatever) it is very simple to just paint on top of a grey scale. To do this- create a terrain in Vue- COPY IT to the CLIP BOARD- PASTE IT into your paint program, and then select a grey color that will be your ROAD- and just paint in the road. If you use a large size terrain- like 1024x1024 or bigger- your scene will have more detail in Vue when you apply your plants, materials, etc. When finished painting in your road- copy it BACK to Vue (with the Terrain Editor open) and paste it (or load it back as a TIF file) and apply your materials. If you want tunnels, you can use a Boolean object to poke holes into your terrains... However, if you want more complex ecosystem layers you will need to create masks for each layer- (but I don't know if you have Vue 5 Infinite- so that might be going to far for you).

Veritas777 posted Sun, 04 December 2005 at 1:34 PM

...Here's a fast paint job I made in Photoshop. Load this into Vue's Terrain Editor and you can see the effect that grey-scale has. Light grey is higher, Dark-Grey is lower...

Oke! Thanks! Yes i have inf5, so i can do that, only i dont't know how to workk with mask's so that would be an other problem, but i know for now enough and i am going experiment some now. Thank you for your reply's, Javil

Sorry to see hear that- but I never bought that prop! (You might try to see if you could "rez-up" the texture map and add in more road detail using a paint program...) --However, looks like some "WILD THINGS" happening in your render!

estherau posted Sun, 04 December 2005 at 8:00 PM

that's a cover i was working on for a friend's music CD. yes i should have a shot at going over the texture in photoshop. good idea. love esther

I also thought i'd give the greyscale thing a shot:- "If you have a Paint program (like Photoshop or whatever) it is very simple to just paint on top of a grey scale. To do this- create a terrain in Vue- COPY IT to the CLIP BOARD- PASTE IT into your paint program" Veritas - I tried selecting the terrain in the world browser and copying it, but nothing pastes into photoshop. i'm doing something wrong aren't I? love esther

Sams3D (sams3d.com)had a road kit in their freebies archives if I remember right.
I suggest you send them an email and they'll help you out with it, I'm sure. They are very good people.

I finished my work with my WIP road. You can view it at the link. I changed the textures from the WIP. For example, I used an image map for the road track texture. Charles
