Very cool stuff Drac, but I am in agreement with those folks who have mentioned that things are a bit dark. IMO your ship would be better displayed by "cheating" in another light, maybe a dim blue one, towards the lower left corner. I think that this would add dimensionality and make your ship and asteroids "pop" out a bit more. Take what I say with a grain of salt, but I figure it's better to err on the side of art than reality.;-)

All that being said my desktop crapped out now I am on my laptop and it looks better now. Go figure. I still agree wit my comments but I can see ti better now.

See, the thing about space is.... it's kinda dark init? I mean the light from the sun might hit objects, but unless there's something for it to bounce off and back onto other objects, you ain't really gonna see a lot. I actually like the fact that we can only make out a little of the ship. I'd be quite happy if you had gone all the way and the nearside is in total darkness and the only hint of the ship was the light catching the edge. Stylish and classy.

Yes, I know space is dark Phil, but are we trying to mirror absolutely the real world, or do we want our carefully crafted babies to be viewable and recognisable(and appreciated) by the casual viewer? I wasn't knocking Drac's fab work at all. It's prob cause I have a severe case of Iritis in one eye. These old orbs need all the help they can get, lol.

The artist can of course render either way they like. Either Star Trek space where everything is amazingly well lit from multiple, invisible light sources, or something like Aliens space where I was never sure what the Sulaco looked like until I'd done a search online for it. Both are perfectly valid and correct, but I prefer the latter.

I'd just drop a very low-level radial close to the ship..I mean, you're the spaceship guy who got me hooked on Wings to begin with..;)
btw..from what I've heard, when you're actually in space, you can't see many stars at all (at least in a solar system..;)

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

gentlemen, the scene is lighted by two radials, one yellow-ish and one blue. the blue one is right next to the ship and it does light it considerably, at least in bryce. but the problem is that it has to integrate in the scene. if you can't see the asteroids darker sides, how do you expect to see the ship? of course, kimpe i think had a decent idea with position lights or whatever on the ship to give it a bit more glow. that's probably the only argument i think is valid, given the fact that space is dark. and i'm on a very good crt monitor, and can see all the details of the ship. other monitors might not have that. drac (many thanks for the comments)

yup..I'm using 4-year old monitor. Here's a though, maybe you could put a light inside, and have them radiating out through portholes?..just a thought..

Drac hates windows on Spaceships, lol! He is right. They are illogical except on(perhaps)a space luxury liner.

MRIguy posted Sun, 04 December 2005 at 5:58 PM

Spacecraft Lighting? Perhaps some lights like on Star Trek (first Movie where Enterprise is pulling out of Space Dock) -- kind of like a self-lit billboard 8-)

Didn't you know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That's why eyedrops and rose-colored glasses are needed.

Wow, I'll admit when I'm wrong! I never realised how hard it is to judge lighting and color when using just 1 eye. Now that I can see out of both again I agree entirely with Drac and Phil. You just keep doing what you're doing Drac, it looks fab.
