yeah, pretty good, although parametric would suit those walls just as fine. personally i wouldn't color it, i'd just choose the second diffusion slider and have the first one a dull grey color :) this way it seems a bit too repetative. all the same, great work :) drac

I'd scale it down in size a bit for those walls.
FranOnTheEdge posted Sun, 04 December 2005 at 7:06 PM
pakled, Bryster, Hey! nice of you to say so. And thanks. But I think Drac could be right. Just now, there is only one box on the wall, but I'm going to have more on the walls once I've made them in Wings and that plus the 'busy-ness' of the metal texture might make the corridor too full to appreciate the scene... But I make no decision now, I'll see what it looks like when I've done more greebles and get them on the walls. Mizrael, You mean make the texture blobs smaller? I could try 22 instead of 11... I'll see. Thanks.

Fran from one that lives in a country that uses galvanised metal on a lot of things ranging from shed walls, roofs, doors, patios and water tanks. I can only suggest a couple of small things with your texture, firstly raise the bump up a tad(bout 5-10%) to give it that rough galvanised look and lower the reflection on it, you wont see much reflection on any galvanised metal. grab some and polish it and you'll see what i mean :) Just my doggy kibble worth
I have opinions of my own -- strong
opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.
FranOnTheEdge posted Sun, 04 December 2005 at 8:29 PM
Yeah, I know the reflections are too much. I too have worked with galvanised metal... well guarded it anyway. But I didn't see that until the render was done and I only posted this to show the textures... in position so to speak. Mind you my galvanised were little round discs or small casings. About the bump, I'm using the same pic but with more contrast etc, but only at about 3.3 or something. Up to 10? or up ten more from 3 to 13? I'll give it a try anyway. If you look at the top left of the pic there are some very distracting reflections - but I was hoping no one would notice until I'd got them fixed... This render both started and completed while the longy was still struggling along... weird.

No the blobs look fine. I'm sayin' make the image tiling smaller. You are tiling that JPG right? Just scale it down a bit. The blobs with the frequency looks great. It's just that they need to be scalled down on that particular wall object.

I see what you mean about the tiling effect. If anyone knows a way of decreasing the tile size without getting that effect, I'd certainly love to hear it! Maybe just decrease it in smaller increments than 50% from 22% to 11% is a huge jump. Try a 10% decrease.
dadt posted Tue, 06 December 2005 at 3:38 PM
Fran--I prefer your original settings but prefer the grey version. Perhaps some playing about with "metallicity" setting might improve it?

pakled, Lol! That you are! Mizrael, " I see what you mean about the tiling effect. If anyone knows a way of decreasing the tile size without getting that effect, I'd certainly love to hear it!" Well... there is one way. You just make another texture, either in a bigger sized canvas or using smaller blobs. I'll think about it... "Maybe just decrease it in smaller increments than 50% from 22% to 11% is a huge jump. Try a 10% decrease." Maybe that would work. dadt, " Fran--I prefer your original settings but prefer the grey version. Perhaps some playing about with "metallicity" setting might improve it?" Sure you could do that, the grey isn't bad. And after all, this is sci-fi, it could be made of anything you can imagine.

I think a seperste bump map to produce bumps, dents and scratches which are not related to the colour texture, probably with a bit of noise in the background.

The thing is I don't really want to damage this texture too much - so dents and scratches, unless part of the metal's own texture, aren't really what I'm looking for.
I was more wanting to bring out the actual metal's OWN texture.
If I can manage that - THEN I'll look into damage afterwards... one step at a time eh?
So - don't you think the blobs should have bump? That's what I can't remember about galvanised metal - Not having any to hand right now.
Or is the brushed effect enough?

If you have a basement you can maybe look at the metal boxes on any electrical outlets to see some galvanised metal? Older boxes most likely. Or Airconditioner vents in the basement too sometimes look like that.

You might have a galvanised water tank in your loft/roofspace.........

No basement - not common here in the UK, we do have a loft, but it's only big enough for mice to get into... Or extremely tiny workmen. Not to worry, I have to go into town tomorrow - if I remember I'll call in at Kent & Blaxhill's, they've probably got something....
