I am new to PS & I was wondering, is there someway of adding a texture to a layer, without changing the colour? For example, I have painted a body colour mostly whitish, but want to add a bit of texture like pores etc, but if I overlay a skin texture, the colour is changed. Any suggestions? Thanks

One, (of many) thing you might try is to copy the original layer, move it to the top, then "Paint" it with eraser set to 50% or less, that will give you the same colour to start with... harder to see, though, and an exact replica of the underlying layer... onr thing you shouldn't do is to flatten layers instead of "Merge visible"... flattening layers, when you're done worjing on them, tends to"wash them out" somewhat... there are other methods of doing the same thing, and you might take a look at the tut's here... I have noticed more than a few that deal with skin textures... you can specify Photoshop tutorials instead of "all"... . hope this helps. Lou. By the bye, you can completely erase the top layer, and still work with it.

What I like to do is fill a new layer with mid-gray and add noise to it, then I set the layer to overlay.

It would be much easier to answer if you post the printscreen, now I can only guess what you need. Try the color blend mode, it will preserve the color of underlaing layer and leave the texture. Another trick is to use darken or lighten blend modes depends on the contrast of the layer with the texture :) Maybe some of this will help :) Tihomir

I am not sure how doing a screenshot could possible help, as I said, I am just talking about 2 layers. Tantarus, what do you mean by "colour blend mode" - I have colour dodge & colour burn, which do you mean? Thanks

Did anybody say; Filters/Textures from the header menu bar. Maybe you have tried this, matbe not!!! Pick what you want or play around with everything in there! Or you can create your own. Find what you want on the web. Run it through Photoshop and save it, as a .PSD file for best results, under the path I have provided you to follow. Your's may be a little different but not much I assure you. After you save, go back to Photoshop and in Filters/Textures/Texturizer, find the little box with the down arrow in it. Click the down arrow and click on 'Load Texture'. Use the 'Look In' menu that comes up and follow the path to the texture you want and apply it,... waa, laa your done!!! P.S. Make sure that your proper layer is active before applying. Play around with the settings in the 'Filter/Tetures' box until you get what you want. Note there probably will be a little color changing because of the re-dispersion of light. Just adjust your layer's color as needed. Hope this helps!?!?!?

A couple of little tid bits to add. 1.If you are going to add many textures, brushes, patterns or anything under/in the Presets folder, beware; the more you add to the folder, the slower Photoshop will become. If you notice my .PSDs above you will see that they are a very large file and I do not many in this folder. Just create a new folder somewhere else on your comp. and follow the path to it. 2. If you marquee around an object you can add texture, color, or almost anything else you want without having a new layer to deal with, this is a quicky way add what you want. I commonly use the methode to add Sunbeams to a Photo or piece of art using the Color Burn & Dodge tools, after I Laso the area I want to effect. Shhhhh,.... that's suppose to be a secrete!!!
