Got high tech in making a High Tek PedWay. Came across when making the textures, wondering why Poser only allows import AVI file and not others like WMV, MPEG. Could save the problems and hassle. The Arrows show where I have movie nods attached to athough they are pics at the moment. Also on the display at the very far end of pedway.

I don't know. The Mac version works with QuickTime files. An early release of Poser 5 once supported animated GIFs, but they took it out later.

Fortunately, it isn't that difficult to convert to AVI. I'd rather they'd focus their priorities elsewhere, myself, like adding FilmBox file-format support, or support for animated MNG thumbnails in the library.

My guess, .avi is pretty much the native Windows video format. There are functions in the API to deal directly with .avi files. Probably pretty much the same situation holds on the Mac for QuickTime. I don't think .wmv even existed when Poser was developed. Will it even handle something like a newer like a Divx encoded .avi?

wmv been out for years, since WinME. P6 came out this year (2005). Since Poser is used in windows you would think WMV, MPEG would be an option as well, even gifs.

Well, Poser was out years before WinME :-) The fact that Poser 3 era bugs & quirks still exist tells you that they haven't updated a lot of code in a looong time and I doubt this is a high priority area for development. Really wild and total guess, simple avi's or image sequences may also be easier for the renderer to deal with than more complex video compression schemes.

Chances are the reason Poser cant import gif..is due to legal issues with Compuserve who owns the gif format..they tend to get a bit annoyed if you use their format in commercial apps..maybe the same reaosn for other formats as well.. also theres that 256 color issue with gif avi is really a good choice anyhow.because it can be imported as raw data i/e no compression..so what you work with is the actual footage.. besides once you export..you can always find a converter to do the change format job :)

Small correction, Unisys used to have patents on the compression method used by GIFs and it was their licensing policy for them that caused all the trouble (see Burn All GIFs).

This was what prompted the birth of PNG format.

http://cloanto.com/users/mcb/19950127giflzw.html its a matter of both companies I guess.. neither here nor there I suppose..point is..even though avi will be more time consuming..the final results will still be better than importing lossy compressed formats similar to differences between wav and MP3.. or oranges and orange juice.. or, or, or.. lol another was the flc/fli animation from autodesk..anybody remember that one? and..you could always just go ask e-frontier why But I assume robo is more interested in reducing rendering time than the history of gif..so how bout we get back to him..after all it's his topic..carry on :)

here is a little thing I did one time just messing around..I had used the windows encoder to record some lightning footage out my window. Then encoder saved it (of course) to wmv format. At that time I was using one of those ATI all-in-wonder cards..and when I tried to play it back in the ATI player..it refused coz it was .wmv. anyhow out of curiosity I renamed the file extension from .wmv to .avi, and the ATI player accepted it, and played it back. may not work in poser..but you can try it..never now :)

Old MPEG file, converted to AVI, filtered and cleaned up to reduce compression artifacts (not that they'd be particularly noticeable at this resolution, but I like to be thorough), then brought into Poser with movie node ....

The TV prop, I believe, was by Zippo.

No, I loaded it into VirtualDub and resaved it as an AVI file. I have several lossless codecs installed, so I can edit the heck out of videos without the quality going down any further.
