Renderosity switching to PHP. First to go is the Marketplace, on January 16. That probably means we will soon get tons of options. I hope avatars and "Quote post" will be among them.

Avatars can be counter active when it comes to performance; I know it looks cool and everything but often slows down page loading, especially when there are lots of posts on the one page. What sort of options can we expect with PHP?

I never intended to make art.

AgentSmith posted Wed, 11 January 2006 at 3:57 AM

We (staff) have usually voted against avatars for that very reason. You can expect good changes with PHP. Look at other/modern PHP forums on other sites to get an idea. Just getting it over to PHP is the first hurdle, then come the modules. ;o) CanNOT wait, myself... AS

will we finally get 'sticky' topics? and an option to sort threads by last modified date? - hope so!

Ummm, why not? It's cool to see how many people read one topic. And I like interesting avatars. Just check the ones at CG Talk. All kinds of silly, funny, stupid, witty, woah and so on avatars. Good for identification and the size can be limited to a couple of kB. Not 15, like the thumbs, but a couple.

Oh, well, there's 12 images on this page. There used to be time when there was much more. Even without avatars.

Disabling post counts also helped the server with speed, so, I doubt its coming back, but I haven't heard anything new about avatars nor post counting, so who knows? Mmmmmm...sticky posts, lol......... AS

Erlik - post and view counts for a topic/thread don't bug me, just those individual post counts for each user that you see in a lot of php forums. edit - LMAO Rudy

Well, I don't mind them, nor do they tell me anything except how often somebody posts in a forum. But I can as easily live without them. BTW, AS, when did Renderosity have post counts? Rudy, now that's a good avatar. :-D

Just hope there will be some limits to the signatures if Rendo switches. Ive seen signatures over at CGtalk covering an entire webpage. Its just slightly annoying, if the real message is about two words or so... :)

I think Rudy may be on to something with his little ghost buster type character lol. For those who wish to have an avatar; just use your image hosting site to add an image under each post, a sort of avatar/signature. Still, I guess it will slow things down as well, but a work around non the less;) Yeah those guys at CGTalk practically have a resume for a signature.

Avatars - yes. I'm sure they'll be options to turn them off if you want. Signatures - mmmm, yeah, sometimes they get carried away and you have to loads a dozen large graphics just for comments like "Yes" "I agree" "You're talking out of you big fat ass" etc. But proper forum options will be something to look forward.

"BTW, AS, when did Renderosity have post counts?" They put a stop to that oh....3-6 months ago, can't really remember exactly when it was now. I agree with Rochr, I have seen some posts in other forums that I actually have to study for a few seconds before I can figure out what is their actual message, as it has to compete with their links, famous quotes, etc, etc, etc. True - we could use avatars that are hosted elsewhere, yet...when that image is no longer avaalable, we are eventually going to see past threads filled with little red x's. Rayraz - sorry, Renderosity already has their regular programmers working on it. ;o( Renderosity as you see it right NOW, is based upon an old piece of forum software called "EZ". The avatars can be fun too. Just as almost everyone in CGtalk's Cinema forum changed their avatar to include a Santa hat in some way before christmas and the announcement of the Hair module. BTW, I like yours Rudy!

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Take a wander through deviantART sometime to see what avatars running amok can do to the look of a site. Makes the place look like a casino. ;)

A question to AS: Are you guys going to introduce different galleries IN the accounts so that I can separate my drawings, photos and Bryce works? (it's in that way at www.3dcommune...but R-sity rules!)

A question to AS: Are you guys going to introduce different galleries IN the accounts so that I can separate my drawings, photos and Bryce works? I myself, would LOVE that. The main task is the PHP switchover without any mishaps. Then the admins will look serioudly at any available options and modules. I'm pretty sure that suggestion has made it to our "what if" list. If not I'll make sure it does. AgentSmith
