I've combined what Takezo came up with for back-lit SSS, plus my mods to it, with a new way I have to do front-lit SSS. This material does a credible job of doing the type of SSS that face_off's skin shaders do, but without having to run python script every time you move a light. Also, face_off's skin shaders only deal with one light. This technique will react to any number of lights automatically and also works with IBL. Give it a try. Will post renders next.
