I just purchased Faveral's stagecoach. I am very impressed with the modeling, and I wonder what program(s) were used to create this great model. What are your favorite modeling programs that are affordable to the average person?

I use 3D Max and Lightwave, but I suppose most people with more sense than I have wouldn't want to spend that much money. Wings 3D is an excellent freeware program that can import/export Poser format compatible models ( 3ds, .obj ) and is extremely easy to use.

I use Wings3d. It is not only free, I also like it better than most comercial programms I tried.
bandolin posted Fri, 27 January 2006 at 3:05 PM
Wings3D for me. Tried Blender (also free) but was way more difficult to learn. Currently I use 3DS Max8, given to me by a friend who thought he wanted to get into modelling but gave up. Otherwise I couldn't afford Max.

The Price on Lightwave recently dropped drastically. I bought it, though I haven't had time to learn it yet... I forever left behind Truespace because I got sick of having my heart broken by Caligari over the years. :)
Little_Dragon posted Fri, 27 January 2006 at 4:05 PM
I started out with trueSpace, but eventually abandoned it because I didn't like the direction Caligari was headed with the interface.
Currently, I use MilkShape 3D (30-day free trial, $25/25 to register).

Wings without a doubt is my favourite modeller. And this is over programs costing me an arm and a leg! --EK

Blender-freeware. If all you want to do in it is model, it's not that tough to learn and the manual is online.

Wings 3d..Local 509 recommends it..;) Anim8tor is 1 file, fits on a floppy, and is a good place to get started (much of Gerald Day's stuff is done in this..or so I'm led to believe..;) Blender is sort of a Swiss-Army-knife program; it's a Modeler, No!, it's also a Renderer!, wait, 3;..our weapons are 3; modeler, Renderer, animator, and File converter..no..our weapons are 4..;) I have a little trouble with the menus and key combinations (you'd best print them out and have them handy until you get the hang of it. I have problems moving around in it, but there's some good add-ons (Discombobulator, for example) Here's a comprehensive list..;) All of the above, and about 1,270-odd more..;) many are free Depending on your budget, I've heard good things about Silo ($109), and Xenodream (creates 3d fractals, then exports them as models..how cool is that?..;) which I don't have the price of..I wish I'd said that.. Silo, without a doubt. At $109 you get the power of higher priced applications, and when version 2 comes out you get the upgrade free!bushi posted Fri, 27 January 2006 at 6:09 PM
I'd agree with Xena. I had used Nendo and Wings3D for years until I tried the Silo demo. The Topo Brush tool is hands down the best tool I've found for constructing clothes for Poser.

I like Hexagon. It's the first modelling app I "got" to any significant degree.
templargfx posted Fri, 27 January 2006 at 6:55 PM
I use Z-Brush2 and Silo. I have 3DS Max 7, but its too complicated (IMO) for making poser stuff. Z-Brush/Silo combo is fantastic for making dynamic clothing. especially when you want to create texture maps with bump-mapping.

Truespace 3.2 since it's free
http://forms.caligari.com/forms/ts3all_free.html
I don't really do much modelling, though... so I can't pass judgement on how good or bad it is compared to other programs which I also don't use.
If you do download it, be warned: you'll probably be inundated with Caligari spams each week wanting you to buy the latest version. went ahead and set up a filter in her email to toss them into the trash when they arrive
But hey, it's another freebie program that you can add to your collection. :o)

I swear by (and occasionally at) MarbleCLAY. Despite some rather aggravating memory leaks which pop up fairly regularly (which is excusable, because it's a free beta), the workflow I get out of it keeps me happily coming back. I use Wings3D, ZBrush, and Silo to add finishing touches to my models, but 90% of the work is done in MarbleCLAY.
davidpayne posted Sat, 28 January 2006 at 2:50 AM
Silo -- when you buy it, it comes with 3 licenses that can be mac or pc. Check out the texture brush. Also, you can try out fully operatioal prog for 30 days.
