Hi all. Not sure if anyone can help, but thought I would throw this one out there. I've just purchased a new laptop to run Poser and other design software on. It's a 3.0 Ghz with 2 Gig of ram running Win XP Home. She's not doing too bad, but I've noticed that when rendering in Poser, I'm only using 50% of my resources. I've tried upping the priority of the Poser process in the Task Manager, but even running it in "real time" it will only use 50%. I would really love to get things done quicker since I've got all of this spare power. Any suggestions? I know, I know... What a problem to have! :P

It is the hyperthreading. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe that Poser can yet take advantage of multiple CPUs. Therefore, it uses 100% of one thread. There are some that say it is actually quicker to disable hyperthreading in CMOS, but in my experience having the hyperthreading enabled helps. Poser renders in one thread and all the windows junk uses the free thread.

Does the laptop use hyperthreading? You'll know because the CPU Usage History section of the Windows Task Manager will have to graphs. And rcr62 is correct, Poser can't currently utilize hyperthreading, so it gets stuck using what for you would amount to a single 1.5 Ghz processor.

thepart about windows junk running on the other thread i'm not a believer of that quite yet, mainly due to my comp is slowwwwwwwww when rendering :)

Grrr, this is sad news!! I too have upgraded my computer to an AMD Dual Core Processor, in the hopes to utilize its functions and lower rendering times. Although it sure has spead things up quite alot :D, it only still uses the "1 CPU"...where as C4D uses both, and does things quicker!! There has to be an update or something, to force poser to use hyperthreading...there has to be a way... :( Oh well, I should check to see if DAZ studio utilizes my Dual processor!! Cheers guys, I found some useful info here!! Thanx!! :D

well there is a script to network render somewhere but poser's use of my cpu (or lack thereof) made me run for carrara :P better lighting! weeeeeee

Yup, that's hyperthreading. And those 50% are misleading. Actually, Poser is taking close to 100% of your CPU. There's a bit more to hyperthreading, but I don't have the time to go into that right now.

Thanks for all of the input. Just out of curiousity, would the hyperthreading issue limit the amount of ram that it uses? It never seems to get hungrier than just over 500 Meg, and I would think that the more ram it was using, the faster it would be. Thanks again for the input. Maybe Poser will get an upgrade soon.

HT doesn't effect that, you still have all your ram

Poser in XP benefits much if the Priority in the Processes of Windows Task Manager is set to High. It makes a big difference for P6 and P5.
