ok so i made a portrait, just 1024x768 shading 0.2, raytrace bounces 3, textures all 1024, 2 lights, no IBL takes 1 hour to do forehead, ok reasonable maybe i goto bed shortly after i saw it was doing the bucket that the right eye (all of it) was in 8 hours (about) later, i come back, the eye didn't show yet figure 8 hours should've been enough, thought poser froze so i sit down to consider cancelling, and my cursor is RIGHT ON the cancel button, when the eye shows up! almost 9 hours wasted :x eeep the corneas have nodes for reflection and spec iriss have the same (testing an idea with reflect) along with some nodes connected to ambient (another test) eyewhites also reflect, with a few nodes for noise so....WHY does it take 8 hours on the damn eye? not much different than a plain mirror really normally i don't care what the time cost, as long as the end result gets more realism, but damn x_x

can you start by giving your hardware rig please? Also, pixel samples And please give the type of your two lights, with these three settings for shadow map: map size bias blur If raytraced shadows, please give settings for that. The time taken for forehead....that could well be hair-related. What hair model, and is it visible in raytrace? ::::: Opera :::::
anxcon posted Thu, 09 February 2006 at 12:39 AM
P4 3.2ghz, 1mb cache, 1gb ram (task manager says 250mb available) 5 pixel samples, lights both spotlights, 256 map, .05 bias, 8 blur raytraced shadows, dynamic hair, visible in raytracing usually i get 12 hours to render a pic (roughly) but this should take about 20 hours, yeesh x_x dont care if carrara has no "visible in raytrace" setting i think i'll be using it more than P6 soon! lol
operaguy posted Thu, 09 February 2006 at 12:45 AM
it's the dynamic hair visible in raytrace. That is MURDER on render time. Your other settings are reasonable. Why do you need the dynamic hair visible in raytrace? So it casts a shadow on the face? Just as an experiment, make the hair invisible to raytrace and try again. ::::: Opera :::::
operaguy posted Thu, 09 February 2006 at 12:53 AM
size: 720x540 Two lights with DMShadows, but raytrace on for another effect, but dynamic hair (it's Kate Hair) invisible to raytrace.
Other settings similar to yours.

i know it's murder, but all of the hair is done (and its shadows) took i figure 1 1/2 hours total for hair areas its just those eyes x_x doesnt seem like the hair would effect em though 2nd eye just finished btw, the reflections didnt come out like i wanted x_x goes the cheap way and rerenders 1 eye and composites do de do
operaguy posted Thu, 09 February 2006 at 1:02 AM
well...for the future then. I don't know what is making the eyes take so long. BTW: your strand hair goes bye bye if your take this scene into Carrara.

Used a IBL AO on this.
WindowsXP(SP2)
3GB DDram (PC3200s, at 400mhz Dual Channel)
AMD Althon XP 3200+, 2.2Ghz
160MB HD (Pri), 80GB HD (Sec), (Both 7200RPM)
ATI Radeon 9600xt (128MB)
I have one time encountered those renders in the past (Using P6), that haven't moved. Wondering if something is running in the Background, a virus, spyware or other slowing things down. But this latest update for P6 is amazing (Well for me anyways). Sometimes a bad nod setup can do bad render times. For example I was using the gather nod, which I know now, I can never use at all does hurt rendering and possibly the system. I would check nod setups, specially on the eyes if that is where the render is holding.

Was one of your lights a point light by any chance? In my expirience, point lights and reflection/refraction doesn't play well together. I have a pair of glasses where I HAVE to remember to alter the glass settings if I have a point light in the scene, or the renderer simply stops once it encounters them...

3 reflections? theres your issue. ok, heres whats going on as far as I can tell. you have transperant reflecting surfaces in the eye materials, perhaps a refract node too (if you do, Im suprised you got as far as you did with the eyes in 8 hours!!) heres a tip -> if you want BOTH reflect AND refract, use the FRESNAL node (P6 only) instead, as it does both.

Along with post13, You really only have 2 reflective surfaces; eyewhite and cornea. If you have reflect on iris and pupil also, you'll get a "bounce" war infinitum between all the reflective surfaces. Iris>Cornea>iris>cornea...x5. Cornea>bg(something to reflect)>cornea>camera..x5 Pupil>Cornea,,,,,,just guessing with info but, I see something on the pupil.

It sounds like the memory bug. When it finishes be sure to do a reboot.
operaguy posted Thu, 09 February 2006 at 9:50 AM
I agree about reboot, sadly. When I am in the middle of sucessive test renders, I sometimes get out-of-memory failure, even though I just rendered nearly the same thing 5 times. There IS some sort of memory release deterioration. And: IT IS NOT always enough to quit Poser and come back in; in extreme cases, you have to reboot the computer. ::::: Opera :::::

about the reflect in iris, i knew there be a reflect war was testing an idea :P opera, pretty eyes, but i'm more of a green or blue person hehe :) one of the effects i was testing, take a spec node, set for slightly larger than the cornea, and allow it drives ambient value then ambient color is the texture map used on the iris the iris "glows" a bit where light hits it if i can get the sightings right, it is a quality that real eyes have some more than others, my ex gf had eyes that glowed :P

WOW OG!! Your renders look AWESOME!!! I wish I had more patience to dig & figure things out like yourself, Paul & maxxx!!! Fantastic work Opera!! Have you made your mind up about Carrara yet? Gerard

can't use Carrara for current projects becuase i need dynamic hair, it does not support it, and rendering close in with Carrara with fine hair and skin....no speed gain on render. Also, I found Carrara's animation slider to be WAY sluggish, so Carrara could only be used as a render platform, no animation, dynamic sym, etc. Stickin' with Poser for now. "one of the effects i was testing, take a spec node, set for slightly larger than the cornea, and allow it drives ambient value then ambient color is the texture map used on the iris the iris "glows" a bit where light hits it" Okay, that sounds like something interesting. Please post back if you get it going. I am very interested in making eyes glow under extreme low light. BTW, easy to turn her eyes blue with one click, but she is from Asia, that would not be Orientally Correct. ::::: Opera :::::

this is art though, correct isn't a limit =) and if you want eyes to glow in dim light, sounds more like a diffuse/ambient mix, mine is more of a spec/ambient mix i'll see what i can do about yours after this :)

i can make eyes glow in the dark, yes, with ambient, but that is primitive. Really what I want is to see the glint of reflection in a character's eye, and some indication of liquid, as the head/eye moves in animation, while the character sits in deep shadow. Not pure dark, but quite dark.

just a thought, since reflect on the iris makes a nice look and doing so, makes "reflect wars", could render iris/cornea alone, and layer in a paint program, i'm sure not insanely hard to make a plugin or something to do batches of frames thats assuming no movie editor to be found to do it :P it's similiar to something i've been considering to do between carrara and poser, which is render the scenes/people then a 2nd render for the hair only, whether carrara or poser just a wildly random thought i had lol

8 hours wow should only take an hour at most I would think....try turning off ray tracing, you really dont need it unless your doing reflections.
anxcon posted Fri, 10 February 2006 at 2:04 AM
i resent that, i haven't turned off raytrace in 9 months and i never will! mwuhahaha, and yes there are reflections
operaguy posted Fri, 10 February 2006 at 2:24 AM
per my post 4 above.....is the hair invisible to raytrace?

"I am not sure why P6 takes so much longer" You answered your own question. If the gather node were available and engaged in P5, do you have any objective, factual reason to believe it would have executed this render faster than P6 did? As to the 12 hours. First, do you have any light on in this scene? ::::: Opera :::::
Latexluv posted Fri, 10 February 2006 at 1:16 PM
Yes, I have lights and I just decided to check my shader. I was using as my base the mirror shader from the Magic Mirror package in the Market place (Shadowdale, I believe). Reflect on that is set to 1.00. When you just bring in a reflect at first, it is set at .2000. Which probably would have done better speed wise if I'd checked it before hitting the render button. I was just reading some materials on the gather node and thought, wouldn't it be nice to try that and have the floor reflective too. I haven't messed with P6 much, so I had a duh moment. I was just messing with my custom water material and took out my reflect and refract and added fresnel as suggested somewhere up there and tried a render. Live and learn.

my point is, with raytrace going like mad in your render, how do you know it is the reflect node, or even the gather node, that is the culprit in the 12 hours? Maybe it's the fact that raytrace on hair and skin is expensive. ::::: Opera :::::
Latexluv posted Fri, 10 February 2006 at 1:28 PM
Hmmm, maybe when it comes to the reflection of the woman in the floor. The upper part of the picture, the girl and the glow ball, rendered in fairly quickly. I started the render at 10:15AM. The render hit the floor region of the image at 10:39AM, and took until 10:42PM that night to complete the bottom of the image. It's a test image, so I can always try it again, adjusting the reflect value and see if I get a 'forever' render again. It could be the gather added to the reflect on the floor (I didn't expect to get any 'gathering' of light from the female at all that surprised me.) Or it could be I need a new laptop, this one is two years old, and it has a hard time with some of the things I want to try in P6 (like IBL with AO, that took 6 hours on a render).

many pressing needs have kept me for working with your glow-in-the-dark shader, i'll try to get to it this weekend. Meanwhile, this is my setup for eyes for the image in post 17 above.
