I'm trying to import xfrog trees in carrara 5.04 in obj format there's no texturing, in lwo format, nothing at all ... in 3ds things come out totally distorted. what am I doing wrong ? thank you all

If nothing comes in something is wrong...maybe it doesn't recognize something in the format. If you don't see it listed in the tree something is not right.Obj usually works best and fixing the textures can be easier, but a pain too. That's usually an issue w/ reading the materials file. Make sure there is a path statement in the obj with no quotes. Also no quotes in mtl when referring to the material.

Almost certainly the Iwo format is of a more recent version than that approved for use by Eovia. Are the xfrog trees ones that you own? or downloading from somewhere? (Like to have access if "free"!} Have you another app into which you could load the obj and 3ds files as a test?

Here is a pic I just did with a .obj on the left & a 3ds on the right. All came in with the textures in place.

I can confirm the .lwo does NOT come in. It shows it importing on the bar but when it's done nothing is there. This same .lwo imports fine into Vue5I & into Poser 6.

That said, I do other .lwo imports that work fine. PS Xfrog uses Lighwave format of 6.5.

I'm convinced this is Xfrog specific....I can import Dystopia blocks that were created in LW for version 7/7.5 And since Xfrog is using a lower version, this should not be an issue. Hope this helps, I'm going to report this a bug of sorts, bizarre at it is.

Xfrog OBJs works fine with Carrara 5. You must make sure that the bitmaps are in the same folder as the OBJ. You can take a look at the Carrara pictures in my gallery, all plants there come from Xfrog.

Hi Orio. They can't be in a sub-dir?

They can be everywhere but if the mtl file does not find them you will have to redirect the paths manually in the texture room. So it's always best to place the obj+mtl inside the directory where the bitmaps are. After you have completed the import process, if you save the Carrara scene file with all bitmaps embedded you will not have to worry about the bitmap location anymore.

Hi all, I've seen the very nice pictures made by Orio, hence my question. The samples species with the demo of Xfrog are mapped with Tiff pictures, maybe its the problem, I'll try converting them to bmp. By the way, how one edit the MTL files ? thanks for your answers.

I have not had to worry about texture maps if it was in a subdirectory, as long as the obj and mtl file were in the same directory that's why I asked. Wondered if this was different in xfrog. mtl and obj are ascii files and a true text editor can be used(not a word processor).Just be careful.

I make a habit of placing all items associated with an import into a single folder, name it, and file in a main file named for the file type.

Certainly nothing wrong with that. For me, I was referring to having an export that is obj and mtl...say out of D|S. The textures are already installed in their runtime sub-directories...the way they like. Now if I export out of say HEX...I do the same thing...everything in one folder.I have never had carrara fuss about not finding the textures. Trying to put all your poser or D|S stuff like that could be a bit of a mess. They certainly don't install the textures that way.
