I got suddenly interested in useing dem's in vue, when I saw the Google Earth ogl thing (which I am not comfortable trying yet).... Where do I get good dem's...and also I was told by a Bryce user I need a 'viewer' that will convert them into something vue could read? I really want to create "real" mountians, terrains...and I do need a step by step help... hmm I will take a look in the backroom here, but in case it is not answered there... Vue 5.7 Infinite on PC

OH this is complicated...so I took a screen shot of the grand canyon in google earth...inverted the grayscale version...
AND WHY DOES THE VUE TERRAIN EDITOR MAKE SPIKEY THINGS instead of a smooth photo gray scale terrain like BRYCE does with great ease??
I thought it was a better editor when I made a fence...but duh, Lyne- that was a flat white and black area...there was no texture.... Bryce always read the height by the gray scale areas...lighter is higher, to perfection! Why does the vue one disregard this?
Yes I had my slider all the way to picture.... oh pooh! rummages around in the backroom some more.... oh! the FUNCTION editor?? Create with a picture there? Hmmmmm....I am nothing if not persistant! :)

Nice find Lyne, I wasn't aware that the USGS had stopped making the files freely available.

1deg DEM has higher resolution than 7.5deg DEM. (More detail, larger in size). Mazak

OH! I will have to try some of those too! :) I did plan on trying different sorts of terrain bump with these...jpg's as bumps and also will force me to get more into functions! (the scariest part of vue! LOL!)

I agree Iloco - I wondered if I had the right .DEM as it looked so flat too hehe! I just guessed it was a flat area, but I might be wrong! It was New York West >8o) The default Country Town EcoSystem is a great though innit? I've taken to un-checking Resize and Centre Imports. The larger the scale, the more influence the atmospheric has (I find). I really must start experimenting more with Ecos - they can look so nice! >8o)

Actually, a 1 degree DEM has LESS resolution than a 7.5 MINUTE DEM.

LOL Rod, I'd definately double check that dem. I'm from NY....the Finger Lake region & have relatives scattered from Buffalo, South to Elmira/Binghampton and north to Geneva. There isn't a flat place around unless you pick a square block of neighborhood, even then there are some hills :)
Trelawney posted Sat, 11 February 2006 at 6:10 PM
Hehe - i'll have to download that to try again Debby, probably it was a 1 Deg DEM (i.e. small resolution)

Wow, this is cool. The 1 degree dems don't work very well, but the 7.5 minute ones are great. Some of them are oddly spiky, but many look excellent.
I wonder if there are any for the Moon, Mars, etc.?
