Over in the Max forum SHONNER posted this link of Greebling made by a plugin for 3DS Max. I just thought the images were very interesting. Kind of like a cubist version of fractals. The plugin is free, now I just need to figure out how to use it. :

not so far..

bandolin posted Tue, 21 February 2006 at 10:48 AM

How did you do that in Bryce? Is this one of your bitmap height maps and then you made a terrain?

Yes bandolin, I've made a map using photoshop "cloud" filter and the "Mozaic" filter.. and I've imported it in bryce's terrain editor.

Very cool Pidjy!

shinyary2 posted Tue, 21 February 2006 at 4:29 PM

This is something similar I did a while back. It can be fun to play with, although personally I tend to prefer the look of more functional greeble more.

Really nice scene Shinyary!!!

I was wondering what happened to that render Robert:) Nice greeble pidgy, maybe some different size blocks. Michael:)

Pidjy got me good and inspired to make a cube room too. :o)

Well, I think your tweaking turned out very well indeed. Nice one AS :) Marc (Thinking of asking AS how many cubes in this one!)

Never tried the PShop method for greeble, looks interesting though. I did try it with primitive cubes:) Image hosting by Photobucket

Quest posted Wed, 22 February 2006 at 6:30 AM

When I started my Bryce cityscapes I had hoped that people would take it a step further and use it for such things as greebles which to me was obvious. I mean, it is just a step away in the procedure. I offer this as a greeble solution for background images using Bryce.

Using my cityscape tutorial in Photoshop when you come to adjusting the height of the buildings, you bring it way down. Then using a gradient brush effect, draw pipes going between the sections you want it to. Adjust the brush between 0 and 90 degrees even a 45 would add more perspective. Mind you, the buildings are at different heights. In the map, use circles, eleipses, rounded rectangles...whatever to get your greeble across.

Then delete those parts that dont conform to your finished image. Im sure this could be taken to a new level. And Im waiting to see it.

This can be used for small sections of greebling in Bryce. Because its random, unless you can subscribe a use for it, it should remain in background fill. Most greebling should be attributed to something that seems to have a use. My 2 cents.

Really nice stuff guys. With all the interest in greebling its a shame it doesn't have a cooler name like Random Quadrangular Displacement Mapping. We could call it ArQDoMing.

Quest, Couldn't find your PhotoShop tutorial on Cityscapes. Do you have a link for it? Looks an interesting way to do greebles

shinyary2 posted Wed, 22 February 2006 at 5:16 PM

Thanks for the comments everyone! AS-- Your textures always get me in your scenes. I'm awful with texturing (hopefully will be taking a class in Photoshop next Summer or Fall that may help to rectify that somewhat). Quest-- Good idea there, although it seems to me somewhat limited in application because it can only be applied to flat surfaces. Looks like some great greeble can be generated that way.

Quest posted Wed, 22 February 2006 at 5:51 PM

Yes, shinyary thats why I say it can be used as background fill. The good thing about it is that its random and no two scapes would be the same, similar perhaps but not the same.

shinyary2 posted Wed, 22 February 2006 at 6:41 PM

I agree. Even if not a background, so long as it's a flat surface. Looks very useful and impressive.

Quest, (hangs head in shame) I should have looked on my hard drive - I already saved this tut, so thanks for the reminder. shinyary2, Oh I'm taking an Eclectic Academy course in "Intermediate Bryce" it includes the DTE!!! and starts in March, so hopefully my texturing should also improve!

Thanks Fran, now I'm really depressed. The only courses/schooling for 3D applications in Australia is to do with 3DSMax and range in price from 20-30 thousand Aus dollar. I wish training was more accessible down here:( Kidding Fran, have fun;)

Attached Link: Eclectic Academy Curriculum

But you can do the Eclectic Academy course - anyone can - it's online and only $20 for a 6 week course. I think there's still time to apply for the next symester's courses - try the link, you can look see what they offer there.
