Thanks for the link but it doesn't solve my problem. I should've said that I'm using OBJ format.

If it's just a sphere you need you can create on using UVMapper ("File->New Model->Shpere"). If you can send me the original sphere, I'll have a look and let you know what I find. Steve stevecox@optonline.net

I think this is a problem with the OBJ importer/exporter for MAX (which is a third-party plug-in). I exported a sphere and spline object from Max as 3DS. Brought it into Poser, exported from Poser as an OBJ and brought it in again. In both cases (3DS and OBJ), the spline and sphere were perfectly smooth. Thanks for everyone's time. azl
