Dosch Design has some of the best packages commercially out. They may seem highly expsnsive but each hdri file is in different formats as well as sizes, for professional use. One of the packages has 113 files. Dosch has a couple of sample files as well as some good downloadable information about HRDI. BTW all their packages are compatible with Carrara 3-5.todd71 posted Tue, 28 February 2006 at 5:20 PM
thanks for that. Id come across them, but kind of overlooked them because of the price. Its always good to have a recommendation. thank you, ill look at them a bit more seriously now.

Also, if you don't want to cough up the bucks for a full set, Sachform let's you buy them individually. It's also possible to make your own with Carrara and Photoshop if you want. I'll post more details if you are interested. Mark

Here are a couple of links you'll want (free hdri files): http://hdri.3dweave.com/library/ http://www.hdrimaps.com/ http://www.avalonarts.co.uk/hdri/hdri.html http://home.comcast.net/~e_craft/hdr.html http://www.lightworks-user.com/hdri_starter_collection.htm

Thanks anastasis20. It doesn't look like most of those are in the format Carrara needs which is polar. There are several formats: polar, box, skydome and others. The link above is a great resource for learning about how they work.

be careful. there is a big difference between IBL files and HDR files. Carrara can use both and each type can be useful. HDR files are high dynamic range type of IBL images. Using photoshop to create IBL files while very usful is not the same as the high dynamic mirror ball created HDR files. good site for imformation is http://gl.ict.usc.edu/HDRShop/ the Introduction link shows the difference of the file types with picture examples.

Hi Mark, which ones are the polar hdri files? I've always used what HDRShop calls "Longitude/Latitude" or panorama type, available at the lightworks-user.com site (looks like a regular photo). I convert any other hdri files in HDRShop using: Image->Panorama->Panoramic Transformations The manual says Carrara hdr files should "completely fill the rectangle of the image" which is what I've always gone by. Thanks

Hi Anastais, Yes, polar and panoramic are the same thing - and the ones that Carrara requires. The other styles of maps will leave weird, black areas in reflections because Carrara is looking at the whole image (like it does in panoramic) and the other styles have large black areas in the whole image. Sorry to confuse things - I'm good at confusing things. ;) I'll get up a Photoshop mini tutorial a little later on either today or tomorrow. This working for a living, there's got to be an easier way. Mark

Keep in mind tho that hdrshop is for non commercial use only, as I understand it. I see w/ v2 you can now purchase a license for 600 for 2 yrs(odd).
