Hi
Please can someone tell me if it's possible to do this is Carrara 5 and how to do it:
I'd like to put a large sticker on a shiny metal box but the sticker has a large square hole in it (near the middle) through which you can see the box surface. I think that I'm supposed to use the alpha channel but whatever I try, it doesn't work.
Secondly, if I map a bitmap directly to a surface, I get excellent renders. If I map a bitmap to a layer (created with the layer tool in the texture room), the renders are awful. The rest of the object renders beautifully but the bitmap that's on the layer is terrible!
I hope I've made myself clear - I've been trying for days but I cant get either of these to work!

A. On one side of your box, using the "Rectangle Layer" tool, click and drag a square shape.
B. On the shader tree under "Rectangle Layer" , select "Multi-Channel" for your shader. Then under that multi-channel, select "Texture Map" for your color and then load a texture map. You should see it appear on your box.
C. Then, still on the shader tree under "Rectangle Layer" for the Opacity Mask select "Texture Map" and load your mask layer.
Hope that helps
Chuck

I can see that you have two files - a psd and a jpg. One's the red image and the other is just a mask for it. What exactly is on the PSD file - is it just 2 layers - the red & black or is there something else on it? Many thanks Ravi

Hey Ravi,
Yes, the PSD is just the red and black. I originally had an alpha mask in the PSD, but that will physically cut a "hole" in the object - so I could have just used a jpg.
BTW, I used one of the HDRI example scenes from the Scene Wizard for the setup - all those files are good starting points for basic scenes and learning lighting setups, etc... or for quick throw-together shots like this one! ;-)

Thanks Chuck Is the Photoshop file 2 layers ie Red on one and Black on the other or is it just a flattened file? Ravi

It's actually 2 layers, but it doesn't really matter, it could have easily been just one layer or a flat jpg. Your opacity mask will do all the talking when it comes to cutting your square hole in your sticker, and the shape of the sticker as well.
