Ok, I initially thought that a .PMD was a PageMaker document; I figured it was the rendered image. However, I was never able to open them so I just chose Export>Image after rendering to save a .PSD. Never really gave the the .PMDs another thought until last night when I loaded a file after moving it to another drive (without the .pmd) and it asked for the missing file. I chose to ignore it, and when the scene came up the facial parameters were not set, and trying to change the parameter dials gave no result (Victoria2, using the Yell dial, for instance); the figure remained unchanged. So am I correct in assuming the .PMD stores parameter dial settings?
