unfortunately. :/ few things are more annoying to me than trying to read text when there are things moving left and right; it distracts my visual cortex. luckily my browser, opera, has an option to turn off gif animation -- i am replying here to let other people like me know there's a fix for the problem -- check your browser settings.

Animated avatars are a pet hate of mine. I was hoping for an option to turn off the display of avatars and signatures altogether, but there isn't one. So if you can't beat 'em, might as well join 'em, I suppose :-( What's the point of signatures anyway? They only ever contain cheesy pop-philosophy and you read halfway through a paragraph of crap (thinking it's part of the message) before you realise it's the signature and you've read it before. I come here to read messages, so I like to see the message and the name of the poster, that's all. But now I get treated to this visual clamour and the messages are almost lost in it. It's like trying to read a street-name in Las Vegas at night.

signatures can be useful for adding a couple of personal links, for example, like ddaydreams above. but for the most part i'm with you, i don't want to read/skip over the same once-witty quote 50 times over. even worse -- some people have started to include large images in their signatures. now i want a killfile.
