Three-word comments. I got a slew of e-bots in my email all from the same guy commenting little three-word comments on my gallery. Examples: "Looks like a Photoshop filter" "Way too dark IMO" "What is it?" "Not very original" One after another within seconds of eachother. Now, don't get me wrong at all, I have one of the toughest skins of anybody you'll ever meet, I can take criticism, but this isn't criticism - this is comment spam. If you comment, comment something meaningful, for better or for worse, but don't just spam my gallery with useless three-word opinions. -Zak

Wouldn't it make more sense to post that comment along with your art uploads inyour gallery rather than here? After all, how many of these 3-word marauders actually visit this forum?

I don't know if this person frequents the forum or not, but he seems to be a ghost - I checked his page, no submissions, no info - just blank. I surmise he has created an account to troll people. So this is really more of a griping/whining thread than anything else. If it continues, that's a different story, however. And I did reply to the comments in my gallery. But still, the "damage" was done.

Is it a prerequisite to have a gallery here to be a member? If so, please provide the link to said info. Did it ever occur to you that I may have removed my gallery for one reason or another? Ahh...everyone loves a griping/whining thread. They're most enjoyable; thanks for starting it. As you can tell there aren't to many on these forums lately. Thanks for stepping up to the plate.

I sense some hostility in your reply. No, there isn't such a rule. Yes, you may have indeed removed your gallery for some reason or another. But do you spam people's galleries? No? I thought not. Maybe I'm blowing this out of proportion. Who knows? But am I not allowed to express my feelings, whiney as they may be, about bad comments in this forum? If not, please say so. :|

actually, that particular type of comment pretty much goes directly against te specific instructions given when one makes a comment in the galleries here. Stuff like that isn't particularly useful or constructive and, imo, is essentially against the spirit of the TOS. And yeah, you can whine. Hell -- it's obvious the poster of those comments is...

thou and I, my friend, can, in the most flunkey world, make, each of us, one non-flunkey, one hero, if we like: that will be two heroes to begin with. (Carlyle)

I'm glad somebody agree's with me. Sometimes it feels like the whole world is against me! :b_crying: :/sarcasm: But seriously, yeah, that dude gets no more chances with me. I did some checking around; a 2-year-old member with nothing in his gallery and nothing better to do than to be spamming my gallery? He's gonna get it if he tries to pull this again.

I've seen almost identical comments in other galleries (not mine -- I'm fairly obscure) under pretty good images that have pulled plenty of complimentary comments. This is definitely a habitual troll.

Elminster_ZK posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 4:51 PM

You want to note me with the guy's name so we can see if this dude's the same person in both cases?

I will if I come across it again. Can't remember now where I saw them :(

Arg, too bad. I'll send an IM your way, see if it jogs your memory.

Being Devil's Advocate here.... Comments as cited are in fact in opposition to the "instructions", i.e "your helpful comments for improving this image", and could be viewed as trolling. As long as this site has existed, people have complained about this occurence, and justifiably so. However, the opposite type of comments, such as, "Kewl!", "man your so awesome!", "plz give us more more more!", etc., etc., are equally in opposition of the guideline, though I've rarely seen complaints about such comments from the "victims" themselves. When you choose to select the Allow Comments thingy, you invite whatever in.

Elminster_ZK posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 8:42 PM

Very true, MikeJ, and I am lucky enough never to have received, for the most part, such vapid spam comments. But you raise a very perceptive point. Ah, the joy of double standards... sigh

I would never say anthing bad about the artist's image, when commenting but I was bummed out that they wouldn't let me leave one-word comments  like "nice!" or "pretty!" or "groovy!" they allow that at certain other poser websites (no names, please) :b_smile:

Elminster_ZK posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 8:45 PM

Well to some of the more serious artists here, that is considered simply spam and useless... but if you simply admire someones work, I think there should be room for simple praise. Maybe another comment sheet. Who knows?

MikeJ posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 8:54 PM

I've always been opposed to the "helpful comments.." thing, because i figure people shouldn't be forced into making any sort of comment, least of all to feel they should only be allowed to comment if they feel they have some advice "for improvement". I have gone to lengths to avoid the "Kewl, man!" type of comments, and that's prevented me from commenting more times than I can think of, because alot of times, that's the only thought that comes to mind; I've seen art here which I don't even feel worthy to LOOK at, let alone suggest advice for "improvement." ;)

Elminster_ZK posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 9:39 PM

Yeah, there's that grey (or gray, however you spell it in my country, I can never remembre which one it is. But I digress) area of commenting where it's simply too good for you to critique, and all you can do is gush. Meh.

No, not being hostile. Sarcastic perhaps, but not hostile. No, I don't spam other people's galleries; I rarely leave a comment, at least at Renderosity, and only because I really don't frequent this site, other than to browse the MarketPlace. I must say this is the first time I've heard the term spam applied to a three word comment in someone's gallery. So be it. I learn something new every day. Sure you can bitch and moan, that's what this and other forums are for. I belong to at least a dozen different forums and 50% of the time that's all people do. Hell, I do it myself at times. The reason I removed my gallery here is because I secured my own domain. I place everything there now. I moved over to photography; no more digital art unless I'm bored. As another mentioned here: you allow comments, you'll end up with comments you may not appreciate. I really don't see how this can be avoided unless Rendo decides to force a minimum of 150 characters for commenting. Oh, and BTW, "I like your gallery." That was four words, so I'll simply leave that comment here. Cheers, Steve

:D Well, I appreciate where you're coming from. There really is no way to restrict vapid comments. I'll just have to live with it. sigh Thanks, by the way. Cheers to yourself.
