Ok, I've been playing for this months compo.

I concur, the first has more to it, somehow!

I like the first, but perhaps with the camera a little to the left, so that the balls are more in the bottom right corner. Might even work better with the balls in the top right (or even top left) corner, so that the reflections aren't cut off at the bottom. The second one works also, but maybe with the front ball not cut off at the bottom.

When it comes to composition, I have this thing about subjects being cropped too closely, with not enough white space around it.

1st image, and I agree about a better crop. That's also a personal preference, yet the viewers eye tends to be distracted by the small piece in the top right quad. Great color combo!
