I'd encourage you to do more like this. A great sense of style. (I'm still looking for mine but I recognise it when I see it.) 

On the other hand Picasso once said that  you should do everything  - once.

Whichever - all I know is I like it.

I wonder if you could use the render, sans bright outline, as a hiehgt map for a terrain and create a kind of bass-relief sculture.

You could. And then light that with a lightdome and LDRI. But now it's supposed to lok like a  picture and it looks like a picture. If you made it relief, then it wouldn't look like a picture and I think you'd lose the impact. If it were a bias-relief, then it's need a setting and wouldn't be able to stand out on it's own.

Does that make sense?
