Subject: POLL: What would you want from a chatroom?

I'm asking both because the new php chat rooms are just around the corner and because I'm a humble admin of RenderGods. What would you like to see in a 3D chatroom, aside from actual chat? Would you like freebies that you can download, links to the latest stuff and news, interactive games, etc?

Thanks,

drac

A way of chatting that doesn't rely on a web browser being open.  I was chatting on the ArtZone chat this morning, but it's a pain to have to have a browser open.

If they go for PHP, I think they should link it to an IRC channel.  Best of both worlds.  Java, CGI, PHP, mIRC, Trillian, or any of the other clients.   I can even chat on my phone.

the php chat afaik IS an irc channel, it's just an internal one that's not exactly connected to the irc network. like it's an emulator more than anything.

drawbridgep posted Tue, 25 April 2006 at 12:54 PM

It DOES look like IRC, but I couldn't figure out how to break it to get the uicy irc commands to work.
(Not that I tried of course)

I'm not into all the fancy stuff, so just plain chat would be fine with me.. RenderGods suits me perfectly :)

I would like for you to be available whenever I have something vitally important to tell you. It's like we're at a party and everytime I have something to say, you're right there. But I have to tape a note to you because you're passed out drunk on the floor.

and ditto the not-web-page-based thing phil said. If I can't be doing 3 things at once, I may as well be watching tv.

Now where did Kimpe run off to...

FranOnTheEdge posted Fri, 28 April 2006 at 3:39 AM

A note to say what time it is where other people are.

Like if Ang turns up next to her name it says 2:10pm, and next to Dracs it says 4:56am and next to mine it says 10:15pm... or something.

And all the times update when someone posts something.

And possibly the country too?

I'm just a nosy b*gger.  gg  And like to know what people in Ulan Bator are doing being awake at that time in the dead of morning.

Oh and free beer too.

Mmmmmm... big red shiny render buttonnnnn....

the timestamps specify what time the poster writes in YOUR time. so if the last thing you see is [draculaz][04:43], the last time i spoke was at 4AM, and it was the last time anyone said anything.

draculaz posted Fri, 28 April 2006 at 4:09 AM

it also happens that there are times when most people are there, but they don't say anything (mostly because no one starts to say something). come in, say a few words, and most importantly, if you do have a broadband connection, leave the chat client there. That's why we're constantly advertising mIRC instead of java or cgi-bin. More people there, even lurking, increase the chances of constant chatting, or of someone in your timezone being there.

m

kimpe posted Fri, 28 April 2006 at 4:41 AM

We also become engrossed in making models, art, etc, etc. The chances are pretty good someone in time will look up from their work and see that you are there. Most people have their sound on and mIRC chimes when someone enters the chat.

And Ang..... six times in a row..:b_sweat: does not mean you can run off and brag to the girls.......

drawbridgep posted Fri, 28 April 2006 at 7:00 AM

Also, mIRC has a voice synth, so even if you're not able to open the window, it will actually TELL you what people are saying.     OK, so gets really annoying after about 5 minutes and one time I left it on and went to work and scared the s*** out of the wife.

Also, and one reason I like Trillian over mIRC is that it has pop up boxes down near the clock.   Kinda like gmail notifications.   Every time someone says something I can see what they said without having to open the chat window and decide if a conversation warrants my comment (which it usually does).

Using mIRC, I set it up to use MS agent (which is built into windows) to toss a text bubble into the corner of the screen. Most of the regulars have it rigged someway so that even if there are 4 other things they're doing, the can keep an eye on chat.

But yeah, we have jobs and families and bodily functions, to keep us away from the computer. So come in, hang out, and be patient.

and in mIRC at anyrate, if you rightclick on a nick in the users list, you can cttp>time to find out when they are.

Quest posted Fri, 28 April 2006 at 11:08 PM

Let’s be more real…for one, it would be nice if I can pass an image for all to see (let’s compress it to 160x120) with the option to enlarge if need be. Or an URL opening on a sub-window. Emoticons that are easily acessable and all can get. A real whipping….ahhhhh, forget that! All done in real time.

xenic101 posted Sat, 29 April 2006 at 1:02 AM

Quest,

We share images and wips and stuff all the time.(like our stuff, not just pic's some people do music or flash stuff, not the other kind of sharing) The two usual ways are to post it online somewhere (some have sites, I have a briefcase, many use flikr or some free photo gallery)provide the url, or you can dcc send the file directly to another person. (which leads to a lot of "Me Too!"ing. but it's like 3 clicks to do...)

I know for me, and I think for all irc clients, double clicking on any url opens it in a new window. which is handy.

And er, I've seen an option to turn emoticons on/off on some clients, but I've never bothered with it, I like the ascii smilies.

You'll have to get with Ang about the rest.

Quest, I've said it before and I'll say it again, you really should come by. Not tonight, I'm going to bed. but this weekend, sundays stay fairly full. I'll leave the light on...
