First one, for me I prefer the text to be single lined.
elzoejam posted Sat, 06 May 2006 at 6:46 AM
I agree. One line :-) Less cluttered.
Mahray posted Sat, 06 May 2006 at 7:06 AM
Hmm... would it be better as one line on the bottom (not split over the image)?

number 1

I like the first one because it has much more of a dramatic / ironic effect - whereas two comes off as merely a bland statement with a picture over it. I vote for image#1

But if your heart is set on Number 2, you should edit the typography and perhaps move the black bar and copy to the top to balance out the ground. The leading is too wide between the two lines, and it all being on the bottom makes the entire image bottom-heavy.
OR, if you want to keep them all together, I would separate the words the way you did in the first version, with ABSENCE in the first line and the rest just below. But ABSENCE would be kerned wide, the letters all caps, and right below, smaller, the entire line matching end to end with ABSENCE. I'll attach a file to show what I mean...

number 1 in my opinion...thanks for putting me onto speefan by the way, true temp on cpu was 48C after 8 hours of computer running.
I have opinions of my own -- strong
opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

number 1 might be better for the text but I like number 2 better as it makes the image look brighter overal. 1st gets so dark with the 2 black bars...

Thanks Mugsey :)
It seems that the vast majority of opinion is for number one.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Sorry I didn't get here earlier to "weigh-in" on this. I like number one also; reason being that my eyes seem to be drawn first to the top as I scan intuitively from top to bottom, left to right, like I'd read a book page. The red lettering against the black background is one of the most eye catching combinations possible. After my eyes shoot to the lettering on top, they are drawn downward, through the picture, maybe because my subconscious is trying to make some gestalt connection between the red and black on the top and bottom of the picture, or something like that, LOL. Then it's almost like my eyeballs do a "squash and stretch" when they see the bottom border, and the message. Then they rebound to the picture in the middle to give it another, more intent look, studying details. I really like the arid look of this . It makes me think of the "Outback", like Ayer's Rock or something. Very Great stuff there!
