Subject: Summer Haiku?

Having mentioned the heat, I thought I'd start a Summer Haiku thread for those who are in this hemisphere. You can use either the 5-7-5 form or the 3-5-3 form.

Ok here's one-

hot, hot, hot
hot, hot, hot, hot, hot
hot, hot, hot

hanevi posted Tue, 16 May 2006 at 7:40 AM

Ok, sorry, couldn't resist that...

Seriously now-

shimmering heat haze,
eyelids burn with dusty sting;
summer commuting

I have to commute two hours to work and two hours back (about 54 Kms totally). I suppose that figures..

Here's another in the 3-5-3 form-

sweaty back,
ragged bloodshot looks,
bus driver

TwoPynts posted Tue, 16 May 2006 at 12:30 PM

hehehe, that was funny. Reminds me of a song... Luv your other two. So how does this work, do I start the next one using the last work from your poem? If so, which? Or is this a free form, whatever you want, haiku thread?

LOL.I get the feeling it's pretty hot there!(Wherever you are...) We're not even close to summer weather yet,but I'm game.  :^)

Kortalouche,I guess you should just pick one of the last words used and then write one in 5-7-5 or 3-5-3...

Great Haiku everyone! Sorry it took a while for me to get back; time zones are funny-when I'm asleep, others are awake.

I intentionally didn't mention about the last word/letter being the next one's starter because i wanted to leave more freedom, but if you want to use the last word/letter to start your next one- go ahead. Only the theme is constant - 'Summer'

Here's another-

brooding heat,
the sun's weight crushes;
tempers fray

Margana posted Wed, 17 May 2006 at 2:59 AM

Hi Hanevi.

I thought that's how this was done....using the last word.

While I think having more freedom is a great idea,I actually like the challenge of having to use the last word, and often it's inspirational to me.So I will use your last word...even though it's a toughie, lol.

Marlene,
The weather down-under is unfortunately on par with this time of year: icy-cold dawns and dusks with sporadic drizzle and bone-chilling winds in between; the warmth has long since packed its bags and is no doubt looming menacingly above you now, preparing its onslaught for a long hot summer. I think it might be good to keep this flexible and keep the creativity going, so if anyone can take up the gauntlets as and when thrown, it would be great, but if not, let's keep the normal Haiku going. Since it appears one can only 'edit' or delete a post for '15' minutes(?), would someone with the authority to do so, kindly delete my FIRST feeble attempt above mentioned.

Thanks much, TallPockets

(What is the reasoning behind only being able to 'edit' for '15'  minutes if I may ask)?

Marlene, now I can't get a single silly one after a day's thinking. Anyway, thought I'd try a more romantic one (strange feel to it after much writing that's been usually very serious and intense). Been thinking of my wife and little daughter; thought I'd write one for my wife. :)

TP, you've got me laughing! :D  I didn't know you could edit only for 15 mins; I'm imagining the scene and laughing again. Good to see you again in the thread.

Although the Monsoon is hard on us here, it's also very beautiful. I was watching the drops fall on little pools of water. How welcome after the scorching heat! Your Haiku is lovely, with a gentle lilt. I love these ones that you write.

I'm sure the silly edge will return at an unexpected time, Marlene. 'I'll be back...' Ha!

Hey Marlene, just thought I'd jog your memory of a certain alliteration challenge thread that's been rather neglected of late. It's been almost three weeks since I last thrust down the gauntlet. :crying:
Hope you can post soon, as I'm almost tempted to begin answering my own challenges!

Nice one Drekinn, conjures up scenes of summer forest fires. I'll post my "Flashes" haiku now. though I know it's redundant in the last/first word sequence. It was penned and has to be aired, or so my ego's telling me.

Flashes of sunlight

Venetian blinded smoochers

Under the boardwalk

Remember, first word in sequential train  is "Burn".

I'm back after weeks of travel, and buried under work again. :(

But as a confirmed haiku junkie, I will not court cold turkey. I'm off to the Autumn Haiku for my fix.
