I mainly create illustrations by 'painting' using programs like Photoshop and Painter. I often use Poser to create rough 'sketches' for lighting etc - ive also used Bryce a little. I'm looking for a fairly simple D app that will give me more control (than Bryce) with hard geometric objects and that will also allow me to model animals, faces etc. I dont need incredible detail or animation, but a very shallow learning curve would be an advantage. Price is not a problem. Should also say, must run on Mac. Any ideas? Cheers in advance, simon

Don't know if it runs on a mac, but a lot of friends who are moving from 2d to 3d rate zBrush 2

If you need it to run on a mac try;

1.Z Brush, very cool very exspensive!

  1. Cheater, cheapish! I believe

  2. Have a look on the Apple website under other apps 3d!

Wings3D happens to come in Mac & Linux flavors as well as PC.

No 100% guarantees with Macs though, since OpenGL performance seems to vary quite a bit depending on video card and OS version. (Seems they have some issues getting the drivers just right.) Shouldn't hurt to try though, I've had the Mac version working fine.

As for my best way of describing it? It's simple enough for beginners, yet robust enough for pros. Doesn't cost a dime, so go and get it already. Plenty of tutorials here and at it's Official Development Forum, not to mention expert users willing to lend advice. Exports to .obj & .3ds which will complement your use of Bryce & Poser.

I also recommend using a mouse other than the one-button one that Macs come with for modeling.

You can try Cinema4D. It's the most used 3D apps for graphic designer I think and you know they're all Macheads.:P

paul, not entering the cartoon challenge?

I'm busy or distracted by other things at the moment PT.  Been working on an airplane model, doing blog rants, sketching at warpaint.se, trying to find an entry level graphic artist job, and pondering over an idea for a flash cartoon music video (even sketched a simple storyboard based on the music I plan on using.)

Version 6 of Cinema4D is often given away free by some of the UK computer art magazines on a cd cover.

Although the free version was limited to 640x480 render size.....

Have bought C4D XLversion 9, pretty happy so far, although I think might also get Bodypaint. simon

Bodypaint is very cool, I like most of cinema - I just can't get materials to look how I want :(

I look forward to seeing your work.
