I'm having tremendous difficulty getting a sci-fi wall to look... well... like a sci-fi wall!

Here's the first attempt with me trying to do rust (very very badly!) I don't like the rust, the top bits look like distorted dancing dolls and the bottom bits like brown grass, or is it just me getting frustrated?  Is it just that it needs more layers???
